Remember the heady times of last spring, when the city and Merritt Paulson proposed <a href="building the new Beaver’s stadium with urban renewal money in Lents Park?

The deal fell through in part because keeping the 38-acre park as open space had a lot of support among neighbors, who complained loudly that the city Parks Department had neglected their beloved park.

Last night Parks Department Commissioner Nick Fish announced a major boon to little Lents: $100,000 for master planning the park, much of which will come from urban renewal funds. As the neighborhood association’s press release notes, the last master plan for Lents Park was drafted in 1981, right at the time that that construction of Interstate 205 cut through the heart of the neighborhood.

Sarah Shay Mirk reported on transportation, sex and gender issues, and politics at the Mercury from 2008-2013. They have gone on to make many things, including countless comics and several books.

  1. Haha, “Lents” am I right folks?

But seriously, I’m glad they’re using the UR money for something. From yesterday’s article in the Trib:

“There was a lot of local opposition to building the new ballpark and adding parking to the park, but out of that contentious process, people came together to plan a new future for the park,” said Fish, explaining that dozens of suggetions have already been made for improvements, ranging from new park benches to more community garden space. “This is a happy ending.”

There’s your major boon: new park benches. Problem solved, the line to relocate your families to Lents forms to my right.
