I feel conflicted posting about this again, as it’s just adding fuel to a mindless quest for attention, but maybe you’re interested. As previously reported, the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas (a.k.a. the “God Hates Fags” crew) is coming to picket outside Grant High School tomorrow.

Why, you may ask, do they want to target innocent high school kids with their bile-filled propaganda? Think again… maybe those kids aren’t so innocent.

WBC to picket Grant High School because they need these words more than they need air to breathe. Today’s youth are violent brute beasts who are good for absolutely nothing. Their parents, teachers and preachers did that to justify their own sins.

Students were debating whether to participate in a counter-protest, but Grant principal Joseph Malone told them to stay far away from the gay-haters:

Staff, Students and Parents:

The staff and students of Grant HS have decided NOT to engage in any of the
Westboro Baptist protest on Thursday, June 3rd. Instead we will have a
student only assembly on the steps into the auditorium from 7:25 โ€” 8:05 that
morning. At 8:05 the students will then go to class. This is being done
for the safety of the Grant High students.

We would like everyone to honor the student and staff voices in addressing
Westboro.

Thank you.

Joseph Malone

(via JustOut)

Malone tells the Mercury that the church scheduled its protest for 7:30 to 8:05, when students are usually outside before class. Tomorrow, he’ll be keeping them indoors.

The principal doesn’t feel threatened, even though the church singled out his high school: “I don’t know why Grant was chosen, but I know that the best way to respond is not to respond.”

The school already has responded, in a sense: when they learned of the visit from Westboro, says Malone, “the teachers and the staff did a lesson plan on free speech and how far it can go before it crosses a line.”

  1. bullshit, those kids and teachers should be able to counter demonstrate. i think the school really missed an opportunity to bring everyone together on an issue and stand up for themselves…

  2. I think the school is handling this matter in the best way possible. WBC is pretty much universally despised; no one needs to show up and make a point of arguing with them. Do not engage the IRL trolls.

  3. I wish every media site, when reporting on the WBC, would point out that the organization is just baiting attacks so they can sue the pants off the people, city, state, etc and get MONEY.

    From the web:

Anybody ever wonder how this “church” makes a living? They are simply scam artists. Most of the family are lawyers. They go around and incite people, then sue anybody who violates their civil rights. Cities who try to ban them, police who fail to protect them, outraged people who take the bait and assault them…

They have got a very lucrative scam going. They are scam artists. Nothing more, nothing less.

  4. why another post about these WBC idiots?

completely ignoring them is the best way to counter.

the more people read this, the more people will go down and counter protest, the more of a chance these WBC morons get on live TV … and that is exactly what they want.

How about one more post to ensure they get on all 4 networks … live … with maybe exclusive interviews to boot?

    good work mercury!

  5. I grew up with some of these fucks. Even used to own one of their signs (scavenger hunt). Fukfuk is 100% right, any attention you give them they will try to turn into a lawsuit. They are completely brainwashed and actually thrive on the conflict; they want you to counter-demonstrate.

  6. I’m sad I’ll miss the chance for photos because I’ll be at work. I got great photos of these douchebags a couple years ago downtown.

  7. So… what you’re saying is that I probably shouldn’t be saving my urine in bottles to douse the WBC people with, then?

  8. Yeah we know that the WBC thrives on attention and that there’s no point in trying to argue with them or blockade them. My friends and I are going to be there tomorrow morning as a show of support to the kids at Grant, especially the queer kids. We’re not going to try to engage the WBC people at all.

  9. They chose Grant due to its very strong gay straight alliance… they also failed to stuck around long enough for the counter protest today. In my imaginary world no one would have showed and a sign would have been in the grass saying “were having fun some where else, come join us when your done throwing a fit.”
