The game ended with a final score of Netherlands 3, Uruguay 2—but here’s what you may have missed: one of the most vicious cleat-to-the-face shots I’ve ever witnessed. Watch it in super slo-mo, starting at the :28 mark.

OW-OW-OUCH!!

Bang bang, choo-choo train, let me see you shake that thang. Wm. Steven Humphrey is the editor-in-chief of the Portland Mercury and has held the job since 2000. (So don’t get any funny ideas.)

  1. Hey – uh, you’re totally clear that cleats are on the BOTTOM of the shoe, right? There was no cleats to the face in that video…

  2. Technically, since the shoe itself is called “a cleat” — esp. in soccer (and American football and, I believe, rugby) where the cleats (read: the spikes on the underside of the shoe) are permanently attached to the shoe — his statement is apt (if slightly, unintentionally, ambiguously misleading).

And technically correct is the best kind of correct.
