A motorcyclist was killed after striking a TriMet bus stopped at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Bryant Street, authorities said this evening.

Portland police responded to the Northeast Portland crash, which happened just before 7 pm, and found a motorcyclist lying in the street. The man, whose name hasn’t been released, was taken to a hospital where he died.

Bekki Witt, a spokeswoman for TriMet, said the #6 bus had yet to pull away from its stop when the motorcyclist, moving fast, rammed into it from behind. “It was at the stop, doing what it should have been doing,” says Witt.

The bus had 15 to 20 passengers, none of whom reported any injuries, Witt said. The name of the driver also hasn’t been released.

The crash comes hours after TriMet announced it had fired the bus driver in the agency’s last fatal crash. But in that crash, in April, the driver, Sandi Day, was found at fault after turning left into a crowd of pedestrians, killing two.

Portland police are still investigating tonight’s crash and may have more details about how it happened. As of 8 pm, traffic was blocked in both directions on MLK around the crash site.

  1. That wasn’t a ‘bus in a fatal crash’ anymore than a brick wall would have been. Waiting until the third paragraph before you explain that the motorcycle hit a parked bus.. dishonest and sensational reporting. Merc, I am disappoint.

  2. I don’t know. I think the first paragraph pretty much says what happened: A motorcyclist did the striking. Doesn’t say a bus hit a motorcyclist. Even says the bus was stopped when it was hit. Read it again, PDXwahine.

“A motorcyclist was killed after striking a TriMet bus STOPPED at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Bryant Street, authorities said this evening.”

  3. it sound like the bus pulled out in front of the motorcyclist , yes the bus was at a stop but when it pit up the people at the stop it just pulled out not looking i seen buses do that they that why the motorcyclist rear ended the bus it put out in front of him thats what it really sound like happen cause it don’t sound right for a motorcylist to just rear end a back of a bus think about it . the driver saying that cause the man is dead and can’t tell his side so the diver is blame the motorcyclist that my story and i’m sticken it to it stella

  4. Another nonstory. Motorcycles are basically a joyride + deathwish. You essentially are saying “I am much closer to death than at any other time in my life when I get on this bike” each and every ride. No sympathy at all for them. Google motorcycle + back of truck for some startling images.

  5. People need to quit being so ignorant and whoever made that comment about a death wish and a joy ride, Michael Ford doesnt need your sympathy! Thats what his family and friends are for! And to all others who showed sympathy and concern Thank You!

  6. Hi, PDXwahine, and everyone else. For the record, no edits were made to the post in response to your fine (and deeply appreciated) comments.

As a few folks have pointed out, the first paragraph said all along that the bus was stopped, etc. I specifically took pains to make sure the hitter and the hittee were spelled out, especially after I found out this wasn’t a crash like the one I posted on earlier Friday.

The headline suggestion from sgtgrumbles was good, though. It could’ve been better.

  7. Regardless of what happened he was a FATHER, SON, BROTHER and a FRIEND to many of people!!! Michael Ford AKA FRESNO will truly be missed by alot of people… I LOVE YOU! Rest In Peace FRESNO! “Kay”
