Portland Monthly‘s new issue features their take on the 32 first pizzas they thought of best pizzas in Portland. While they get the top of the list pretty much right (I’ll quibble that Dove Vivi should be included alongside Ken’s, Apizza Scholls, Nostrana, and Lovely’s Fifty Fifty in the “Master Class” category), it’s rounded out by names pulled randomly from the “pizza” section of the yellow pages—Pizza Schmizza? Gag me with a spoon. No Lonesome’s? No Wy’East? No Depokos?

Willamette Week struck back with a top-ten list of pizzas that PoMo missed. They take care of most of my complaints, but I think UFO’s deserves a place somewhere. Certainly above Hot Lips. Anything else that’s been snubbed? Full Lists after the jump.

  1. The fact that they could even list 32 “best” pizzas in this town shows how full of shit they are. This city is lousy for pizza unless you want truffled squid ink mousse on it.

And there’s a time and place for that, but COME ON.

  2. I’ll take Bella Faccia over Appiza Scholls any day. No snobbish limits on dough, no insane waits from the it’s-trendy-so-it-must-be-good crowd, and quite possibly the best sausage in town.

  3. No Hammy’s? Really? I like their pizza, plus they deliver to our house in the suburbs of Felony Flats.

I still have a soft spot for Rocco’s only because it reminds me of first living in Portland in 1997. On another note, later that year, I was temping at US Bank when they got bought out by some Midwest bank. To celebrate they ordered about 5 million pizzas from Rocco’s. The delivery guys looked very tired. I don’t know if they fed the whole pink tower or what, but there was pizza everywhere for days on end. Both the pizza and employee morale didn’t last too long after that.

  4. I think Bella Faccia sucks. even with the snootiness and wait, Apizza Scholls beats it with both hands tied behind their back.

But… I’d like to throw Sparky’s in for the good slice, and Blind Onion for that everyday just damned solid pizza…

  5. I’ve got to throw in for Rocco’s as well. It’s not great, but it does have a certain appeal. There’s something quite appealing about horking down a ridiculously huge slice of pie that’s festooned with three different types of pork.

  6. Am I the only one who reads this paper from the ‘Burbs? Where the hell do I get a decent pie Southeast of Portland? Beaverton, Tigard, LO, etc.

    Ironically Yelp is no help.

  7. Why no love for Stark Naked Pizza 2835 Southeast Stark Street ? I walk past other places on those lists to get there. Although I do eat my share of Vincente’s and the free Hot Lips at those sustainability meetings.

  8. I used to think that the best food of whatever type was the one that I liked the most. It’s good to have these lists to tell me I’m wrong to like what I like, but how do we know which food writer is handing down the correct opinion of what we all like?

  9. Vegan here, my options are limited. But I will say Portobello makes a great pizza. I also had Sizzle Pie for the first time on Monday – pretty nice and looking forward to trying it again.

Lonesome’s gets my vote though. Not because I’ve had any of their pizza or anything. Only because of their pizza names.
