Have you seen this shit? Del Monte is now wrapping bananas in plastic. The plastic second-skin gives bananas a couple extra days before they rot and, conveniently, says a big “fuck you” to nature at the same time.

This week I reviewed the documentary about plastic waste, Bag It, which was surprisingly good and creates a sort of paranoid awareness of the mindless ubiquity of plastic. Plastic is so overused that people and companies don’t think twice about using it—which means we wind up with a world where plastic bags are the number one consumer product and the number one piece of ocean trash. Thanks, Del Monte, for turning bananas into weapons of mass marine mammal destruction.

Bag It has a special opening night screening tomorrow night at the Hollywood Theater, featuring Mayor Sam Adams, Representative Ben Cannon and some sort of junk to funk fashion show.

Sarah Shay Mirk reported on transportation, sex and gender issues, and politics at the Mercury from 2008-2013. They have gone on to make many things, including countless comics and several books.

  1. Oh wait they are. It looked like they were putting two to a bag until I looked at it again. Move along…nothing to see here………

  2. At least Del Monte is creating jobs here, packing and sealing the bags, probably by third-world orphans for a nickel a month, but as usual all you libtards try to stifle corporate growth.
