While other music fans were at the Britney Spears spectacle at the Rose Garden or the My Morning Jacket shred-fest at Edgefield, I trekked north—to Clark County, in pursuit of a rare glimpse of Canadian power trio Rush. And as should be expected from anyone except the most dickish of music snobs or anyone attached to a vagina, the show was killer.

  1. AKA the Clark County Fairgrounds up where 205 hits I-5 again.

But yes, naming a lively entertainment venue “Sleep Country” has to be one of the worst corporate naming ideas ever.

  2. Thank you Ned. People will not stop making me fun of me for my love of Rush but whatever. FUCKING BYTOR AND THE SNOWDOG.

    That is all.

  3. they always put on a great show, as long as they stay away from the new stuff. yuck.

By-tor = awesome. always been partial to Cygnus X-1, myself.

  4. After 20 years (literally) of vowing to never see music at a “big show” again, I went with some friends up to Clark County to see this and IT FUCKING RULED!

The people-watching was awesome; let’s face it, Rush fans are most often dorks and that’s OK. The video and lights were nice but the MUSIC WAS SO GODDAMN GOOD.

  5. “Megadeth at the Sleep Country Amphitheater”… Yeah, that venue name makes any band sound like they’re doing an snoozeworthy show.

But I’m ambivalent towards Rush. I totally like lots of Canadian music though, guys, don’t judge me!

  6. Bummed we missed the show. Moving Pictures was one of the first LPs I ever bought back when I was in the 8th grade. Though quite well worn I still have that copy.

  7. The only good thing about the stupidly named venue is that it means the taxpayers aren’t completely propping up that failing enterprise (great shows notwithstanding).
Clark County is run by businessmen and builder’s associations and don’t blink at making taxpayers underwrite their ventures (Hilton Convention Center, I’m looking at you).

  8. I guess this was a big night for Portland music – I was at the Dropkick Murphys show at the Roseland, and that was wicked awesome, too. Sold out show – I had to buy a scalped ticket. They did a 90-minute set! Full on mosh pit for 90 minutes. Awesome sauce.

  9. Sorry, Rush was not that great in the eighties unless you were a stoner (which i suspect some of you are) because fine musicians they are indeed, but Geddy Lee’s screeching voice and the general bullshit mystic stuff put me off. I would however have enjoyed Dropkick Murphys
