In the wee hours of the morning, a car drove down the stairs near the Salmon St. fountain and through the blue railing separating the waterfront path from the Willamette River (as reported in Good Morning News!). The woman driving — the only occupant in the car — died after breaking off the railing and hitting the water below.
According to the Portland Police Bureau’s press release, the investigation is underway and all other information on the incident is on hold until the woman’s family is contacted.
An onlooker said that the car was pulled out of the river by a tow truck this morning.

THAT WOMAN WAS OBVIOUSLY CONFUSED ABOUT THE PROPER TIME AND DATE FOR THE MERCURY’S BIG FLOAT.
Damn. These cases are such a strain on Boat Cop’s marriage.
Graham, you just broke your own record for being a heartless ass. TSW, you’re not much better.
She may have family that strolls these blogs.
Oh my god! She didn’t hit a bike on the way down, did she?

The article in the O also said that witnesses didn’t try to help. She went in at “about 2:45 a.m.” and police didn’t arrive until 2:58. That’s a lot of standing around, watching someone drown. That’s the sad part!
I’m really sickened by these comments. Worse than being heartless, they’re not even slightly funny.
Reymont, according to Oregon Live, the water there is 34 feet deep. What can the average onlooker do in a case like this? Also, since it happened at approx 2:45 AM, most of the witnesses were probably under the influence of alcohol.
@Ujfoyt – Swim down and help her open the door!
