LET'S DO THIS RIGHT: Now that recreational cannabis is legal in Oregon, the State of Oregon and the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) have better things to do than arrest you for getting stoned. That doesn't mean it's a free-for-all, though—they recently dropped $350,000 on a public information/marketing campaign, "What's Legal? Educate Before You Recreate" (whatslegaloregon.com) to keep your butt fine-free and out of jail.

You can keep up with the program via the website, the OLCC newsletter, or the campaign's Facebook (facebook.com/whatslegalOR) and Twitter/Instagram (@whatslegalOR) accounts, especially as things continue to evolve in terms of legal sales and edibles. For now, here are the official basic tenets of the law relevant to you as a consumer—know 'em, love 'em, hang 'em on your fridge. And for crying out loud, stay outta jail!

You can possess and use recreational marijuana if you are 21 and older. If you are younger, it's illegal.

You can use recreational marijuana at home or on private property. Public use is illegal.

You can possess up to eight ounces of useable marijuana in your home and up to one ounce outside the home.

Driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal. Please be responsible.

You can grow up to four plants per residence, out of public view.

You can share or give away recreational marijuana. You can't sell it or buy it until licensed retail shops open.

You can't take marijuana in or out of the state. That includes Washington.

You can make edible products at home or receive them as gifts, but you can still only use them in private places.
