I like how the vocal baseball contingent has turned this into a Baseball vs. Soccer issue. Aren’t people allowed to enjoy more than one sport? And if so, can’t one of those sports be soccer?
Last time I checked, Timbers fans weren’t out to send the Beavers packing. MLS required a specific stadium type, and the City of Portland couldn’t find a way to provide a new home for the Beavers, even though they desperately needed one, regardless of PGE’s conversion status.
Baseball fans need to direct their anger toward the City of Portland, and not just the City Council. The citizens also did their part by not attending Beavers games and speaking out against alternative solutions.
Let’s not forget that Merritt Paulson owns both the teams. If he wasn’t so insistent about upgrading the Timbers to MLS, we’d still have both teams sharing the space.
And if he’d really gotten his way, we’d have a whole lot more to bitch about: a publicly financed stadium in Lents. Yeah, we lost the Beavers, but if you’ll pardon my mention of the ever-so-cliched group known as “taxpayers”, I’m starting to think that we dodged a bullet. We didn’t need a new stadium for our mediocre and vaguely popular minor-league baseball team, especially when wedged on top of all the other financial deals Paulson’s swung with the city to make MLS happen.
Actually no Chunty you’re wrong. You’re so wrong I can’t even begin to speak of how wrong you are. There would not be two teams operating in PGE Park now. The Timbers would have folded because of not being financially viable and Merritt would have just moved the Beavers to Escondido himself with their better fan base (Padres fans) and the city tossing him a new AAA specific ballpark and cheap rent. That’s a business reality.
We may have dodged a bullet but something tells me a AAA park that doesn’t suck would have much better attendance here. Also…Merritt’s way would have been the Memorial Coliseum location. In his mind I’m guessing Lents was way down the list of places he’d like to have the stadium.
Wily Mo Pena – a reliable last round rotisserie selection along with Felix Pie as a “Well, at least I get a chuckle of his name, so what the fuck?”
Baseball fans have only themselves to blame. The City Council responded to the pressure soccer fans exerted. Had beavo fans chosen, they could have drowned out the voices of a few weird architects.
“had beavo fans chosen”??? what the fuck are you going on about? are you saying that the MINOR league baseball fans in this area “chose” not to save their beloved team?
well, any way you slice it, sports are dumb.
there.
The anti-soccer contingent are usually (not always) tea-baggers that didn’t really go Beavers games in the first place and just want to bitch about how Portland is anti-American. Read Oregonlive, there are a lot of dipshits there. To the anti-soccer contingent I say, thank you for keeping Timbers tickets cheap. To the anti-sports community I say go write some folk music or something, hippies.
