A few days ago I got an email from one Zachary Auburn, some dude I don't know but with whom I felt an immediate kinship—even a brotherhood, perhaps. Because this is what Auburn wrote to me:

A few weeks ago I was watching the episode that has Riker's first captain (aka a Mr. John Locke!!!), and they have to track down and recover their old ship that had an illegal interphasic cloaking device. What I had forgotten about this episode was that there is a scene in the beginning where Picard has to judge an art contest where all the children of the Enterprise make Picard art projects. Here is a link to refresh your memory.

I saw this and thought "Wow, wouldn't it be great if there was a Captain Picard Day in the real life?" And then I decided to be the change I wanted to see in the world.

So Auburn's done just that: Portland's own Captain Picard Day will be Friday, November 18 at Floating World Comics (400 NW Couch), and everyone—yep, even you—can create Picard-inspired art to go on display. Ground Kontrol, Guardian Games, and Floating World will be contributing prizes for the best ones (no copying Paul Menegay!), and in general, this whole thing sounds delightful. The Facebook page for the event is here; the promotional flyer is after the jump.

I don't know what you're waiting for, people. Get on it. Otherwise my life-size, anatomically accurate Picard sculpture made entirely out of boondoggle is gonna sweep this thing. It's pretty impressive, if I do say so myself.
