Books with Pictures, the comics store with a mission of carrying all-inclusive fare, has opened the doors of its new location at 1401 SE Division, the former home of Longfellow’s Books. The building is a distinctive landmark along Southeast Division, with murals facing the streets; it’s now the new, expanded home for Books with Pictures, which was formerly located a few blocks west on Division.
Earlier this year Books with Pictures owner Katie Proctor started a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the move, updating and renovating the building while preserving its historic value. The new location celebrates its grand opening tonight with the launch party for Dylan Meconis’ new graphic novel, Queen of the Sea.
Longfellow's Books closed in 2018 following the death of owner Jon Hagen, who had been operating the business since 1980 and had been at the Southeast Division location since 1991. Hagen's son specifically offered to first sell the building to Proctor, who had become friendly with the family and lives in the neighborhood. Longfellow's musty stacks will be missed, but with Proctor maintaining the space's legacy, a continued—and bright—future for the building as a place to score great books is assured.
