Good morning, Portland! We're back to normal summer weather today, with highs expected in the mid-70s (ahh, sweet relief). Onto the headlines.

In local news:

• A swimmer is presumed dead after multiple unsuccessful searches for his body in the Columbia River, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday. The swimmer, 35-year-old Kevin McDowell, reportedly jumped into the river from a boat on Sunday to help a struggling swimmer and did not return to the surface. The swimmer McDowell was trying to save was able to get out of the water safely.

• Amid changing federal rules, free meals for Oregon children are still available throughout the summer—with a couple changes. More than 700 sites across the state are offering free lunches this summer, but children must stay onsite to eat and parents are unable to pick up meals for their kids. Next school year, however, COVID-era universal free lunch will no longer be available as the federal government reverts to only offering free lunch to students who qualify by income.

• You know, everything has been going so well and normal and fine recently, let’s add some Biblical crickets to spice things up:

• Unionizing efforts are really heating up for family grocer foreign-owned chain New Seasons. On Thursday, workers at the Sellwood location filed to unionize, joining workers at the company’s Hillsboro and Seven Corners locations.

• ICYMI: In the year since the deadly heatwave, lawmakers have expanded access to AC units, increased protections for workers in hot weather, and ramped up climate-related investments.

In national and international news:

• Ghislaine Maxwell, longtime companion of accused abuser and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, is awaiting sentencing this morning. Maxwell was convicted of sex trafficking, transporting a minor to participate in illegal sex acts, and two conspiracy charges in December. While her charges carry up to 55 years in prison, Maxwell’s lawyers asked the judge to sentence her to no more than five years.

• Fifty migrants were found dead in the back of a tractor trailer in San Antonio Monday. Authorities also transported 16 others to the hospital for heat-related injuries. Three people have been arrested in connection with the deaths and the federal government is investigating.

• At least 49 people are dead and a dozen more injured after a fire broke out in a southwestern Colombia prison Monday. According to prison authorities, the fire started after inmates attempted to riot, but details are limited.

• Three people are dead and at least 50 are injured after an Amtrak train derailed and tipped over in Missouri on Monday. The train collided with a dump truck at an intersection that didn’t have any train warning lights or motion gate, according to authorities. The truck driver was one of the three fatalities in the crash.

• At least 18 people are dead and 36 people are still missing following a Russian missile strike on a Ukrainian mall Monday. Russia, which has already targeted civilian apartments during its invasion of Ukraine, falsely claimed that the mall was an empty arms depot.

• While the removal of federal abortion rights predominantly impacts people who can get pregnant, scholars are noting that it’s important to consider how the end of Roe impacts the people causing the pregnancies. A recent study indicates that one in five cisgender men have impregnated someone who’s had an abortion. That number is likely an undercount, researchers say, because not all men are aware of the pregnancies and resulting abortions they have caused.

• The House committee investigating January 6 is holding a last-minute public hearing today to "to present recently obtained evidence and receive witness testimony.” The hearing will start at 1 pm EST and you can watch it here.

• Here's a cute animal video, as promised:
