Over the weekend, Michele Bachmann said this:
"I don't know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We've had an earthquake; we've had a hurricane. He said, 'Are you going to start listening to me here?' Listen to the American people, because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet, and we've got to rein in the spending."
Today, Alice Stewart, Michele Bachmann's press secretary, claimed that Bachmann has a sense of humor: "Obviously she was saying it in jest," Stewart said. Was Bachmann joking? Maybe. Problem is, if you attribute human qualities like jealousy and bigotry to your god, nobody can tell when you're joking or not. If Michele Bachmann were to announce that God came to her and told her that he believes lasagna is an abomination, nobody would know if she was serious or not. The default would be to assume she was serious. If she believes God loses sleep over gay sex, why wouldn't he also have strong opinions about lasagna?
