Dan & Louis Oyster Festival

Oysters: Some people fear them, other people adore them. Regardless, most of us could stand to get a little more aquatinted with them. Why? Because we in the Northwest are privy to some of the freshest and best-tasting oysters in the world–we might as well take advantage. Why else? Because oysters jumpstart your libido without a $15 co-pay.
Dan & Louis Oyster Bar hosts an old-fashioned outdoor oyster fest this Saturday with a bevy of activities to get you more intimate with these delectable, edible bivalves. For the truly dedicated, stop in for presentations by Northwest oyster growers, information on estuaries, and cooking demonstrations by fancy-pants Wildwood chef Cory Schreiber. Who couldn’t use a few more ideas on how to cook oysters? For the hands-on oyster lover, the fest offers oyster shucking and eating contests. (In the oyster shooting challenges, you may be asked to slurp down an oyster as big as your fist, so be prepared.) And for the entirely hedonistic oyster lover, there’ll be barbequed, raw, deep-fried, and stewed oysters for the eating, and MacTarnahan’s beer for the drinking. Plus, you can feel good about yourself because oysters are healthy, and all profits from the oyster fest go to Ecotrust, which helps environmentally conscious businesses and entrepreneurs get off the ground. Aw, shucks. KS

The key to unstoppably delicious Vietnamese noodle soup is the broth. The broth! Yes, those other things–the meat, the noodles, the fresh herbs–are very important. But placing perfect rice noodles in a less-than-stellar broth is like putting a Vera Wang dress on Tori Spelling. To this eater’s tongue, no other soup can compete with Pho Hung’s. There is a richness and depth of flavor to the broth that makes me go just plain whatever-the-Vietnamese-word-for-crazy-is. KG
