Riyadh’s
1382 SE Hawthorne, 235-1254
We all know Pat Buchanan would love to build a ten-foot wall across our border with Mexico, but it’s also a known fact that he can put away five or six tacos at any given meal. So for all you close-minded types who think every Arab might be a terrorist, why not make an attempt to appreciate Lebanese culture and go to Riyadh’s? Riyadh’s is quaint in appearance, but for a few bucks you can get a tasty falafel sandwich, lamb gyro, or salad. Service is quick and comes with a smile; plus they have a pretty good selection of beers. So let’s bridge these divides, people! SL
Annie’s Donuts
3449 NE 72nd, 284-2752
Just a few short weeks ago, after dining across the street at Pho Hung, I stopped at Annie’s for dessert, and discovered the single most decadent donut ever created. The Cruller? Ha. My donut hero can hardly muster a sneer for those mouthwatering, milky French twists. The Bismark? That irresistible, custard-filled creation with a beret of smooth chocolate cowers in fear in the presence of my champion. No, the king of donuts is one that we Americans can be proud of–the chocolate-dipped buttermilk donut. Please don’t try to eat more than one. KG
Portland City Grill
111 SW 5th, 30th Floor, 450-0030
Portland City Grill is undoubtedly the meatiest meat market in Portland. Expect dozens of pairs of fake breasts sheathed in every color of tight sweater, topped with perfectly made up faces, slickly coiffed hair, and an equal number of businessmen to ogle them. But that’s not the only reason to go. Their late night menu, weeknights after 10, Sunday after 4, has a bunch of great items under $5. The burger is hand pattied, huge, and one of the best in town; the mussels are fresh; the seared tuna is amazing; and that’s just the beginning. Choose from about 20 items (crab cakes, pot stickers, salads), get fancy full, and enjoy the fabulous view (of the city), for almost nothing. KS
