EVENT:

Vegan Dinner Date to Benefit Books to Prisoners, Thursday, July 8, Liberty Hall, 311 N Ivy at Mississippi, $5-25 Suggested Donation,

pdxbookstoprisoners@riseup.net for reservations

The folks at Portland Books to Prisoners are putting on their aprons and firing up the old oven to provide you a delicious three course Mexi-vegan dinner featuring Enchiladas Veganas, Flautas de Papas, Posole Verde, Churros, and more! Even better, vegan enthusiasts with kids can enjoy free childcare and free food for the munchkins, all the while enlightening the incarcerated to the nuances of the universe through reading. After all, rehabilitation means more than lifting weights.

Fuller’s Restaurant

136 NW 9th, 222-5608

Fuller’s is one of a dying breed. It’s a down home, blue-and-white collar, sit-at-the-counter coffee shop/diner in the middle of the Pearl (of course, I didn’t forget about the equally wonderful, slightly more dressy Byways). Everyone sits on a bar stool here, gobbling breakfasts of bacon and eggs, draining cup after cup of coffee, and reading the paper. I’ve known many men who call this place their favorite breakfast spot, but it’s a great place for all sexes, especially if you’re dining solo. KS

Cafe Pasion

1728 SE 7th, 236-9468

This tiny Mexican hideaway opened a couple weeks ago, but their future looks promising. While it’s not the cheapest burrito in town (one will run you about $8), a couple additions set it apart: the massive portions come with sides of rice, beans, and guacamole; and innovative ingredients. The Burrito de Espinacas is filled with onions, mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, and Mexican cactus, and the whole thing is covered in green sauce, melted cheese, and toasted almonds. The menu is extensive, and ranges from Caldo de Camaron, a spicy shrimp soup with vegetables, avocado, and lime, to Enchiladas Costenas, tortillas filled with crab meat, tomatoes, and peppers in garlic butter.
