It’s winter solstice this Sunday, which means we’re turning a corner into gradually longer days. ‘Til then, we’re keeping things merry and bright with weekend picks from Peacock Lane‘s pedestrian-only nights to The Winter Market and from Cool Yule and Hot Jazz to a Live Klezmer Chanukah Concert. Check out our weekly top picks guide for more ideas.
FRIDAY
LIVE MUSIC
Federale w/ Taylor Kingman, Strange & The Familiars
Punky witchcraft boutique Skyclad Emporium and paranormal java company Sinister Coffee present a night of macabre poetry and local bands performing dark, cinematic tracks. A showcase of poets from Skyclad Emporium’s recurring open mic night There’s No Quiet In This Room kicks the night off before Strange & the Familiars guide us into the musical portion of the evening with their narrative jazz tunes. I’m hoping they play “Pretty Red Dress,” a moody song they released this past Valentine’s Day that also references Christmas. Taylor Kingman, who fronts psych doom boogie band TK & The Holy Know-Nothings, follows up with a solo set of his vulnerable Americana tracks and Federale headlines with their hazy, psych rock music inspired by the soundtracks of ’60s and ’70s Spaghetti Westerns. Fun fact: Longtime Brian Jonestown Massacre bassist Collin Hegna leads the six-piece ensemble that is Federale. SHANNON LUBETICH
