Nationale and Portland Garment Factory will host a one-night pop-up exhibition with Bay Area fiber artist Meghan Bogden Shimek who uses “traditional tapestry and Navajo techniques” to create abstract wall weavings from raw materials. The pop-up exhibition immediately follows Shimek’s Off Loom Roving Weaving workshop, a three-hour session where, if you’ve got the money to drop on such things, you will learn basic weaving techniques to create your own unique piece of art. You may have seen your woo-woo friends on social media making a HUGE FUCKING DEAL about the solar eclipse happening on August 21. Well, it actually is a HUGE FUCKING DEAL, because this particular eclipse’s path of totality (the part of the earth where the solar eclipse is fully visible) will span the west coast to the east coast of the United States for the first time in 99 years. Luckily for you, no makeshift box or sheet of paper with holes is needed to view it safely thanks to Warby Parker. Right now they are giving away FREE eclipse-viewing glasses so you can see this cosmic spectacle without burning your eyeballs to oblivion. Fade to Light: A Multidimensional Fashion Event will hold its summer installment featuring 10 designers, a group spanning established brands and those debuting for the first time. See new collections from Carolyn Hart, Fräulein Couture, One Imaginary Girl, Sonia Kasparian, and Veil & Valor. Also featured will be five graduating students from Portland Fashion Institute’s Fashion Forward Program, whose lines include Alton Oak, Suburban Buddha, Wilfred Apparel, Woodville, and Valtinsdottir. The next day, and at the same venue, the Art Institute of Portland will hold a fashion show for its 16 graduating students, and I have to admit I have a special place in my heart for this show since AI is my alma mater. Each year the show adopts a different theme and title, and this year it’s Projections: A Fashion Experience—an event showcasing the talents of emerging as well as established designers, and fashion photographers.
