Exploring the Pacific Northwest—On the Cheap
Finally! The sun has returned! And with it comes the season of sharing picnic tables with drunk strangers on Portland's glorious patios. This summer we're all about VIBES, so here are some patio options for whatever day-drinking, sun-soaking mood you're in.
Rooftop cityscapes at Revolution Hall
The historic Washington High School is a gem to explore. The recently remodeled campus is surrounded by a sprawling dog park and ground-level patio, and inside are hallways filled with lockers, indoor bars, and an 850-seat venue. But the real money is the rooftop bar with an incredible west-facing view of downtown. Lined with picnic tables and boasting a full bar (no running stairs for drinks!), youâll only get a few reliably non-rainy months to check out this stunning view with a cocktail in your hand. Watch the sunset over the city and keep drinking until the starry lights come on above you. 1300 SE Stark, Mon-Fri 4 pm-late; Sat-Sun 1 pm-late.
Backyard picnic feels at Blackbird Pizza on Interstate
Serving slices and pies of the same great pizza as their flagship on Southeast Hawthorne, the new location of Blackbird Pizza is only improving their excellent reputation with a massive back deck and yard. Shaded by huge trees, covered in greenery, and surrounded by a tall fence for total pizza-eating privacy, this Blackbird is sure to be a new favorite spot to suck down a few beers or sip on one of their classic mason jar cocktails. 6214 N Interstate, 11 am-2 am
Cornhole at Landmark Saloon
Donât worryâthe surrounding condos havenât blocked out the sun from the Landmark Saloon patio. Itâs one of the neighborhoodâs best spots to spend a day tooling around in the adult playground that is the barâs backyard. Get the crew together to play a few rounds of cornhole, pet strangersâ dogs, or eat BBQ from a cart! Filled with beers, beards, and bark chips (and a slushy machine to boot), itâs hard to think of a friendlier summer hangout. 4847 SE Division, noon-close
Westside courtyards at MoMoâs
Street-side tables are ubiquitous at downtown bars and restaurants, but where do you go when you want to have an actual conversation thatâs not drowned out by traffic or interrupted by the wandering herds of Portland tourists? Momoâs has a multi-level outdoor seating area nestled between businesses and residences thatâs one of the most private, quaint dive patios the West side has to offer. 725 SW 10th, 3 pm-2:30 am
Old Portland charm at Holmanâs
Look closely around the back patio of Holmanâs and youâll find a few hidden delightsâa fake-frog-filled fountain, garish fence decorations, and maybe even the barfly you slept with a few years ago whose name youâre not totally sure of. Other assets include tons of umbrella-topped garden tables and a long menu of comfort food. Open at 8 am (!!!) and featuring a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar on Saturday and Sunday, itâs easy to lose track of time and spend a whole day on this classic Portland patio. 15 SE 28th, 8 am-2:30 am
Casual garden party at Vendetta
Opened in 2006, Vendetta existed on Williams long before it was the street we know today. The Mercuryâs original review called the bar âhassle-free,â and âfriendlier than it sounds,â which are both still true of the now-staple of North Portland. The unpretentious gravel patio is lined with planter boxes and vegetation, where one can easily find a private nook or cranny to slip into for a cheap beer or delicious cocktail. 4306 N Williams, 1 pm-2 am.
