SINCE 2007, the Portland Queer Documentary Film Fest (QDoc) has been screening LGBT documentaries with a rainbow of subjects. According to fest organizers, this year's collection "features strong themes of drag, music, history, and politics—often within the same film." Plus, here can you see Kathleen Hanna dancing right after John Waters' William S. Burroughs ruminations.
Thursday's fest opener, Forever's Gonna Start Tonight, is about Vicki Marlane, a female-impersonating pioneer.
Friday features 8: The Mormon Proposition, documenting the insidious lengths the Mormon church went to while campaigning for California's anti same-sex marriage law. It's followed by A Drag King Extravaganza, an insidery look at the drag king community, but don't miss the opening short, Stormé: The Lady of the Jewel Box, a touching film about an early male impersonator.
Saturday's doc fodder: disco icon Sylvester (Unsung: Sylvester), the passionate relationship of a lesbian couple (Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement), Burroughs' storied life (William S. Burroughs: A Man Within), and the world premiere of Le Tigre's 2004 tour documentary Le Tigre: On Tour. Sunday is just as varied, with a hush-hush "sneak preview" (QDoc won't release the title or subject of the "almost finished" film, plus looks at Nepal's LBGT struggles (Other Nature), small-town prejudices (Out in the Silence), and the lesbian comedy/yodeling duo the Topp Twins (Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls).
