SUPERMAN VERSUS BATMAN: Who wins? That question lies at the heart of Injustice: Gods Among Us, a new title from the people responsible for Mortal Kombat that pits DC Comics characters against one another in appropriately bombastic brawls. While you won't see Wonder Woman decapitate Aquaman, Injustice proves that Marvel isn't the only company capable of adapting its heroes for virtual fisticuffs—and more crucially, that fighting games can be enjoyed solo.

Without spoiling the plot of Injustice, I can say that those who follow DC's books will feel right at home with the story: Superman decides the best way to save humanity is by turning despot, and Batman disagrees. It's not Shakespeare, but as a blend of comic book and fighting-game storytelling, Injustice handily accomplishes its goals. Gameplay-wise, Injustice is designed as an exceedingly user-friendly fighter, drawing equal inspiration from Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. From a control standpoint, there simply aren't any other fighters as easy to pick up and play as Injustice, at least that also boast enough depth to satisfy the hardcore set.

This alone would be impressive, but the key to Injustice's success is how fully it embraces singleplayer gaming. Not only does Injustice feature a standard arcade mode (complete with unique storylines for each fighter), it also boasts a five-hour-long story mode and 240 unique missions. All told, you could easily blow 50-plus hours of your life with Injustice without even touching the game's almost entirely lag-free online multiplayer components.

Whether you're a fan of DC Comics or fighting games, you'll find dozens of reasons to love Injustice. Objectively, it's not the best fighter of the current console generation—but I can't remember the last time I had so much fun beating the hell out of a humanoid mass of pixels.
