UPDATE, WED JAN 3: And the Hollywood Theater (4122 NE Sandy) has jumped in too, with a screening of The Hunger (1983) on Thurs Feb 4. Sounds like the Laurelhurst Theater will also be playing The Hunger starting on Fri Jan 22, as soon as they're done screening Labyrinth.

ORIGINAL POST:

David Bowie was no stranger to the silver screen. For the next few days, three Portland theaters are giving those of us saddened by his death chances to appreciate the man in ways that—appropriately and literally—are larger than life.

Over at the Academy Theater (7818 SE Stark), they've got Nicolas Roeg's 1976 sci-fi flick starring Bowie, The Man Who Fell to Earth. Weirdly, the Academy was playing Man Who Fell to Earth before the recent news. "It is still hard to believe the coincidence that we happened to be showing the film in celebration of David Bowie’s birthday and new album release at the time of his death," says the Academy's manager, Dannon Dripps. The theater has extended their run of the film. Following the news of Bowie's death, they'll continue playing it through Thursday, January 21, "in honor of his brilliant works."

On Wednesday, January 13, at 9:30 pm at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton), there'll be a free, all-ages David Bowie Tribute. "As the home of the longest-running Rocky Horror Picture Show in the world (another place where we learn that it is okay to let our freak flag fly), it is only fitting that we open our doors to pay tribute to this remarkable being," says the Clinton's owner, Lani Jo Leigh. "We’ll screen music videos, interviews, and movie clips tomorrow night. Come to sing, cry, and of course, LET'S DANCE."

And finally, starting on Friday, January 15 at the Laurelhurst Theater (2735 E Burnside), there's Jim Henson's 1986 kids flick Labyrinth—which, yes, you've seen a billion times, and, yes, plays in Portland regularly. But if there's any time to revisit it, it's now—and, y'know. "Magic Dance."
