It's here: The first round of the Pickathon lineup announcement! This year's installment of the music festival takes place on July 31-August 2 at Pendarvis Farm, and tickets have just gone on sale right this very second. To accompany that, the Pickathon folks have dropped 30 names of performers who'll be out on the farm for this most beloved of Portland-area festivals.

So without further ado, let's look at what's in store:

Langhorne Slim • Ty Segall • tUnE-yArDs • Tinariwen • Diiv • Shabazz Palaces • Viet Cong • Leon Bridges • J.D. McPherson • Sam Amidon • Ryley Walker • Hiss Golden Messenger • Summer Cannibals • Rodrigo Amarante • Whitey Morgan • Edna Vazquez • Kevin Morby • The Weather Station • Mandolin Orange • Sinkane • Happyness • Joseph • Broncho • Israel Nash • A Giant Dog • Sam Cohen (of Yellowbirds) • Meatbodies • Dom Flemons • The Quebe Sisters Band • The Brothers Comatose • Alice Gerrard
Next week they'll announce another 20 or so names to complete the lineup of the three-day festival, but for now there's plenty to chew on. Langhorne Slim and Ty Segall are making welcome returns to the fest; same with Shabazz Palaces, J.D. McPherson, Hiss Golden Messenger, Whitey Morgan, and plenty of others. tUnE-yArDs and Tinariwen are both first-timers, and perfect fits for the festival, as are local acts Summer Cannibals, Edna Vazquez, and Joseph. The trend toward wiry, guitar-driven garage-rock continues, with Diiv, Broncho, Viet Cong, Meatbodies, and A Giant Dog, plus mellower folkier stuff from Ryley Walker, Sam Amidon, and Kevin Morby. The wonderful Happyness is alone worth planning the weekend around. And although you might not have heard of him yet, Leon Bridges will likely be a huge name by the time August rolls around.

One of the best things about Pickathon is the discovery of new acts, due in no small part to the excellent curation of the festival, where a band's monetary draw is secondary to their musical quality. It seems like you can wander into a hidden corner of the farm and find some breathtaking act you've never heard of before. But there's no harm in being prepared, either. To get primed, here's a Spotify playlist of these 30 acts, and there'll be more where that came from next week, when the rest of the lineup is announced. In the meantime, you can head over to Pickathon.com and pick up your tickets.
