Saturday night’s sold-out Bleached show at the Doug Fir brought sunburned, Southern Californian punk to the shadowy Portland basement. No Parents‘ opening set felt like a high school house party sans adults, the kind that always seemed constantly on the brink of getting shut down. Like the weird stepbrother of FIDLAR and White Fang, No Parents explore topics like dildos, pizza, Bud Light, and the Illuminati with pop-punk gusto. They even have a track called “Take Your Pants Off and Fart.”
Bleached mostly played material from their new album, Welcome the Worms, but also threw in a Ramones cover and some old favorites like “Dazed,” “Think of You,” and “Next Stop.” Their set was nuts—they invited random fans to tambourine, bassist Micayla Grace crowd-surfed while playing, all while frontwoman Jen Clavin thrashed around the stage. Between darkly hypnotic “oohs” and “ahs,” Bleached fully embodied their friend’s nickname for the band, “the evil Go-Go’s.”
