IT’S THAT TIME of the year again. At the end of yet another December we ask hundreds of individuals involved in Portland’s robust music sceneโ€”from bands, to labels, to bookers, to record labels, and plenty moreโ€”to name their top five albums of the year. Some approach this task with an infinite level of precision and dedication, weighing the attributes of a year’s worth of recordings, while others just send us an ironic list with Crash Test Dummies’ God Shuffled His Feet on it.

It’s not a surprise that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasyโ€”Kanye West’s overly ambitious ode to ego, pussy, and Bon Iver samplesโ€”found itself atop the list, but that album was surpassed (barely) by Beach House’s dreamy masterwork Teen Dream. Rounding out the top three was Laura Veirs’ gorgeous July Flame, the finest recording you will ever hear named for a variety of peach. That album in particular is noteworthy since it still resonated with listeners 11 months after its January release.

As always, we don’t have nearly enough space to publish every respective list here, but you can view them online at portlandmercury.com. It’s there that you can also find the most important list of allโ€”your own. Feel free to add your very own top five list and weigh in on the year in music.

Ross Beach (Ross Beach and the Hellpets)
1. Of Montrealโ€”False Priest
The collage approach to dance/pop music at its finest with a healthy supply of Prince-esque interludes. Itโ€™s second only to their live show.
2. His Name Shall Breatheโ€”There Is an Earthquake Inside of Me
Sparse and haunting songs from a guy I stumbled across playing an opening set at Ella Street. Available only as a free download, I think.
3. The Preservation Hall Jazz Bandโ€”Preservation: An Album To Benefit Preservation Hall and The Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program
Great collaboration between the venerable jazz combo and other New Orleans musicians. Itโ€™s part of the ongoing effort to keep it going down there.
4. Spoonโ€”Transference
Wherein they prove that DIY recording approaches have no effect on their energy and songwriting.
5. Beach Houseโ€”Teen Dreamย  Gorgeous. The unofficial makeout record of 2010, or so I presume.

Jim Brunberg (Mississippi Studios)
1. Mimicking Birdsโ€”self-titled
Because weird harmonies are still being sung, thank God. Good with mushroom tea, follow with the Harry Nilsson documentary.
2. Ramona Fallsโ€”Intuit
This is a pop snapshot of the future of where Portland pop could/should/would go.ย  3. Mumford & Sonsโ€”Sigh No More
Because it breaks my heart. Good sandwiched between Avett Brothersโ€™ latest and two bottles of red wine.
4. Black Prairieโ€”Feast of the Huntersโ€™ Moon
Ainโ€™t nothing like it.
5. Bruce Springsteenโ€”The Promise
You have to count this because of all the unreleased tracks and awesome footage.

John A.D. (Anthem Records)
1. Clubrootโ€”II: MMX
2010 is the year everyone waited for the Burial record that never came. Instead, they got a bunch of average remixes, a phoned-in โ€œDJโ€ selection on the final MAH BBC1 show, and the truly terrible track โ€œProphecy.โ€ Those who werenโ€™t so blinded by their limited musical vocab to realize that he is simply the sum parts of his influences found the level of beauty and emotional complexity promised by Burial in Clubroot. Ultimately, this will be seen as one of the most important records in the history of UK garage.
2. Deathspell Omegaโ€”Paracletus
The fashionable really killed black metal for many people. However, I think they will avoid making Deathspell an abomination like they have with the fashion party following that wolves band [Wolves in the Throne Room], as they are just far too intricate musically and unusual generally. They likely will never make shirts that look as โ€œcultโ€ as other bands, so that puts the kibosh on their scenester cred right there. This is a record to be listened to by Magma fans as much as metal heads.
3. Terror Danjahโ€”Power Grid
The king of the grime instrumental makes another record with what seems like the same eight samples he has used on every other release, but again with astoundingly visceral effect. Makes you wonder what he would do if his hard drive crashed and took his sample arsenal with it.
4. Daniel Savioโ€”Nekropolis
Many believe Skweee is the logical counterpoint to the whole Flying Lotus/Low End Theory thing. I just think it is far more creative, and not just a safe way of repackaging your standard cocktail party downbeat style that has been floating around as long as there has been DJ Food comps. Daniel Savio, and his mixture of electro, boogie, and synth leads is a prime example, and this, his Armageddon-themed masterpiece, will long be a singular statement in this sound. Look up โ€œMonkey Pee Monkey Pooโ€ on YouTube for a peek into this whole hidden side of Sweden.
5. Daniel Mencheโ€”Terre Paroxysm
There are a lot of people out there who create โ€œnoise,โ€ and no, I am not talking about the droves of crap indie rock bands that collect food stamps in Portlandโ€”I mean in the actual noise community. Very few have an atmosphere that is instantly recognizable, and of these, even fewer have a signature that is so stacked with so many layers of sound, yet still is somehow able to maintain a sense of layering in this cacophony. In that way, it is hardly noise at all. Menche is creating these types of records. The more you listen to them, the more they are like a stereogram one stares at to reveal the hidden image. With each listen another layer of miasma subsides to the background, revealing a hidden beauty.

Nathan Jr. (Duover)
1. Mike Coykendallโ€”The Unbearable Being of Likenessย  His leftovers are tastier than most folksโ€™ fresh baked! (While I occasionally play with Mike, I had nothing to do with this record, nor his forthcoming double album. Just a fan in this case.)
2. Blitzen Trapperโ€”Destroyer of the Void
This band will never put out a less than stellar record. They have honed their craft to a consistent level that most musicians never even sniff.
3. Run on Sentenceโ€”You, the Darkness, and Me
Old sounding and a bloodletting rejuvenation. A win-win in my book.
4. Nick Jainaโ€”A Bird in the Opera House
I could go on and on about Nick. Iโ€™ll just say that he is one of the best writers and hardest workers Iโ€™ve ever met. It is rare that oneโ€™s creativity and work ethic are equally formidable. Stop making the rest of us look bad Nick. Iโ€™m getting you a bong and an Xbox for Christmas.

Josh Spacek (Monarques)
1. Morning Bendersโ€”Big Echo
Thoughtful songwriting and arrangements with amazing production. A beautifully crafted record. Itโ€™s been on rotation since it came out and we are still going strong.ย  2. Love Languageโ€”Libraries
Stu McLamb was part of the inspiration for starting Monarques. His songwriting is incredibly good. I wish this record had more of the feel of the debut, the production on Libraries makes it difficult to get to the heart of the songs, but impacting none the less.ย  3. Ariel Pinkโ€™s Haunted Graffitiโ€”Before Today
The weirdest slick pop album Iโ€™ve heard.
4. Y La Bambaโ€”Luponย  Iโ€™m proud of this band and this record. I was around during the whole process of recording and getting this album out into the world. Itโ€™s a wonderful first effort and nods at the greatness they are capable of.

Grass Widowโ€”Past Time
Itโ€™s dangerous to call an album perfect, but it would be too big of a disservice to understate how flawlessly beautiful this record is. These three wonderfully talented ladies are going to take over the world.
Eddy Current Suppression Ringโ€”Rush to Relax
This record has such an incredible energy and urgency to it, which makes senseโ€”legend has it that the Aussies recorded the entire full-length in six hours. Super catchy, gnashing guitar-driven garage-punk works up and sprawls out into rhythm-section-driven Kraut jammers.
Purple Rhinestone Eagleโ€”The Great Return
This summer, PRE toured the US and Europe and it felt like they were gone for years. Luckily, Portlandโ€™s empressess of all things heavy, psychy, and magickal left us an amazing album to listen to while they were away.ย  Titanโ€”Sweet Dreams
Titan is a stoner metal sci-fi nerdโ€™s dreamโ€”heavy, proggy, and mesmerizing riffage with a hidden undertone of horror score legend Goblin. It makes you feel like you have discovered something that no one wants you to know about, and they are after you.
Dara Puspitaโ€”1966-1968
Just one reissue, okay? Sublime Frequencies compiled and released 26 tracks from Dara Puspita, the first all-female Indonesian pop group to play all their own instruments and sing. Raw, rocking flower-power garage with playful girl-group vocals, and every song a hit.

Jeremiah Hayden (Amigo/Amiga Recordings)
1. The Nationalโ€”High Violet
I hated the National. I thought they were the most overrated band around and I never understood why people were so into Boxer and Alligator. On a tour last May, I played an in-store in Davis, California, and we got a $50 gift certificate as payment. Jay-Z and a few bargain bin albums later I decided I was going to get High Violet and hear what all the fuss was about for our 13-hour drive to Seattle after the show that night. Maybe the National is still boring and it was just the environment in which it was being played or my fear of waking up the passenger to find a new CD, but I fell in love with High Violet. I couldnโ€™t change it for most of the drive and it cemented itself in my mind for months. I canโ€™t seem to find an album anywhere to replace it when I get the itchโ€”including Alligator or Boxer (although they sound better than they used to).ย  2. Pastor T.L. Barrett and the Youth for Christ Choirโ€”Like a Ship… (Without a Sail)
Originally recorded in 1974, but never properly released until this year, this album sounds like what Spiritualized would do once finally having become spiritualized. Iโ€™ve heard my share of choirs and church music, but never has it effectively moved my soul the way this record does. The band itself is made up of some cats and some kids with amazing tasteโ€”the drums and bass back the choir in a way that kicks your ass even as a new record in 2010, and the choral arrangements seem to leave room for some โ€œfollowing the spiritโ€ that I find to be pretty compelling.ย  3. Grindermanโ€”Grinderman 2
Because seriously… what is this? Who does this?ย  4. Das Racistโ€”Sit Down, Man
ย If I hadnโ€™t seen Das Racist at a little club in Seattle I would probably hate them. They say the stupidest shit and make references to, well, everything and Iโ€™m pretty sure theyโ€™re not that into scrawny-white-hipster-dudes like myself trying to pretend I can throw my hands in the air when I hear what I believe to be a sick rhyme or disrespectful anecdote, but this record is hilarious. And theyโ€™re pretty much right about most things.
5. Quasiโ€”American Gong
I came kind of late to the Quasi train since I was only 12 when the band started. This album is smart. Tons of hits on this record like โ€œLittle White Horse,โ€ โ€œBye Bye Blackbirdโ€ make for some great live jams. Hereโ€™s to a band doing whatever they want to do for this long and growing in the process.

  12. Nice to see some love for “American Gong”, “Crazy For You” and “Kairos”, all albums that are definitely high on my list for the year.

Knight School’s “Revenger” was my favorite out-of-left field find this year. Harlem’s “Hippies” may have gotten more play than anything else, though.

The new Born Ruffians album was really buoyed by a fantastic live performance in support of the record. Good stuff, and I’m surprised it didn’t show up on anyone’s list.

Other stuff I dug a lot: Dum Dum Girls: “I Will Be”, Disappears: “Lux”, Forest City Lovers: “Carriage”.
