The US Capitol was placed on lockdown today after Trump supporters broke through police barricades and stormed the building—an action that was encouraged yesterday by Trump himself. Congress, who were meeting to certify the electoral college votes, were whisked away to safety as reports began coming in that shots were fired inside the building, and people were injured. Stay tuned for the latest updates.
I'm preparing to return to the House floor to resume fulfilling our Constitutional duty to certify the presidential election. We won't let domestic terrorists stop us from doing our job.

The Washington Post is reporting that one woman who was shot at the Capitol earlier today is now dead. The woman's identity has not yet been released, and it's unclear what the exact circumstances were around her shooting.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi is telling reporters that Congress will reconvene tonight to continue confirming the Electoral College vote, attempted coup be damned. How many Republicans will continue to oppose the results is still TBD.
Here's Sen. Jeff Merkley telling the press about what the day has been like for him.
Meanwhile, Oregon's sole Republican in US Congress is worried about coming off as a Judge Judy in condemning Trump. They can't sink any lower!
Spoke w/ Rep. Clifford Bentz, Oregon's lone Republican in Congress, about Capitol breach.
“I would not describe today as ‘coup.’ I would call it a protest gone really wrong, really bad," he said. "As far as judging the president, I don’t see how that’s very productive right now"

Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter have now all removed videos (and a tweet) from Trump that essentially encouraged the violence. What a sight to behold:
Here in the Pacific Northwest, right-wing wannabe freedom fighters are having their own temper tantrums. Here's the view in Washington state:

Here are a few other updates.
While some of the most progressive members of Congress are calling for Trump to be impeached (again) for his role in fueling this dumpster fire, others are warning that it might not be politically feasible, especially with only 14 days left in Trump's term.
.@RepJayapal just now on impeaching Trump again: "Look, if I had my way we would impeach him again right now. But that makes no sense. It won’t happen with the Republicans... so I think we will have to find ways—and we are working on that—to hold him accountable."
— Rich Smith (@richsssmith) January 6, 2021
Per NPR, the Capitol has been now cleared. Lawmakers were reportedly evacuated and brought to Fort McNair, an army base in DC.
Twitter has trotted out a whole new kind of content warning for Trump, preventing a tweet of his from being liked, responded to, or retweeted because it poses "a risk of violence." (You can still quote-tweet it.) No word yet on when Twitter will just delete his fucking account.
Oh, how the turntables:

And finally: The Dow is loving this insurrection, so I guess it was all worth it in the end.

NBC News is reporting that one person has been shot inside the Capitol by law enforcement and is in critical condition. After an astonishing delay (that will surely need to be explained), the National Guard has been deployed and is en route. More than one improvised explosive devices (such as pipe bombs) have been found on Capitol grounds.
BREAKING. Mob of Trump supporters swarm the media near the US Capitol. They yell what Trump frequently says, “the media is the enemy of the people.” They destroy equipment and chased out reporters. On her third day in office, Rep. Cori Bush is exhibiting the energy this country needs right now:
I believe the Republican members of Congress who have incited this domestic terror attack through their attempts to overturn the election must face consequences. They have broken their sacred Oath of Office.

And....
I am drawing up Articles of Impeachment.
Donald J. Trump should be impeached by the House of Representatives & removed from office by the United States Senate.
We can’t allow him to remain in office, it’s a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath.
— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) January 6, 2021
Meanwhile, Sen. Ted Cruz is using this attempted overthrow of the government as an opportunity to fundraise.
The Capitol building is under lockdown, evacuations underway, guns drawn in the House chamber.
Sen. Ted Cruz just sent a fundraising email/text.

Meanwhile, President-Elect Biden has issued the following statement:
"I call on Donald Trump to go on television now to fulfill his oath and defend the constitution... [This] is not a protest. It's insurrection. The world is watching, like so many Americans. I am genuinely shocked and sad that our nation... has come to such a dark moment."

Police have guns drawn at the Capitol as people break into the House chambers. People in MAGA hats stormed the offices of lawmakers and keep taking photos. The mayor of D.C. issued a 6 p.m. curfew. Someone's on Trump's Twitter account is suddenly asking people to stay peaceful, after encouraging the opposite earlier this morning. Nancy Pelosi requested the National Guard to deal with the insurgency, seeing as the Capitol police failed.

I need 15 monitors to keep up. The House and Senate had hardly split to hear objections regarding baseless claims of voter fraud in Arizona—McConnell did get in a speech where he scolded Republicans and told them that "Democracy would enter a death spiral" if Cruz, Hawley, and the other freaks got their way—before Democracy entered a death spiral as Trump's terrorists stormed the Capitol.
