RAGING GRANNIES REDUX

Portland's anti-war raging grannies were arrested again on Good Friday, March 21, for daubing the army recruitment center on NE Broadway with red handprints. Cops arrested two grannies, one grandpa, and one 35-year-old woman. On Good Friday last year, six grannies were arrested for third-degree criminal mischief, after putting "bloody" handprints (made of red tempera paint) on the windows. They were ultimately found not guilty, after the prosecuting deputy district attorney in the case compared them to the terrorists who blew up the World Trade Center in New York on 9/11. Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schrunk did not return a call asking what he plans to charge the protesters with this time. MATT DAVIS

BALLOT CHALLENGE

On March 24, Basic Rights Oregon (BRO) and the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon filed separate challenges to the ballot title for an initiative that would overturn the state's domestic partnership law.

"The draft ballot title fails to accurately describe this extremely convoluted initiative," according to BRO's challenge, explaining that the 15-word ballot title doesn't reflect the scope of the repeal, the fact that it's retroactive, or "that the initiative prohibits or bans any state or local law that legally recognizes domestic partnerships."

The challenge is "the first step to ensuring that the ballot title accurately informs voters about what the measure does," says BRO's Karynn Fish. AMY J. RUIZ
