Commissioner Randy Leonard, lover of all things neon, has a new blog post up announcing a deal to save the iconic “Made in Oregon” sign atop the White Stag building.
The sign, which most recently advertised the Made in Oregon retail outfit, has taken on many guises over the years:

In 2009, the University of Oregon (the building’s anchor tenant) applied to the landmarks commission to change the sign to read “University of Oregon.” Randy vehemently opposed this deal.
Now the sign’s owner, Ramsay Signs, has agreed to donate it to the city. Here’s a rather anemic rendering of what it will look like:

Not a bad compromise. I hope they bold up the type a bit, though.

Yay!!
Eh, better than “U of O,” but I still like “Made in Oregon” better. I guess it’s time to get that tatted on me, so I will never forget it. Bolder for sure though.
I’ll take it!
In addition to bolding up the type, they should also add a bunch of sparkles to the stag’s body.
Italic Bold Condensed! Whatever it takes to jazz up that font! Then I’ll tat it on my ass. YAY, neon. Go RANDY!
Made in Oregon.
They should also add a little arrow that points to where Portland is on the map.
And they should replace, “OLD TOWN,” with “NOT MAINE.”
I see those “For Lease” signs featured in the picture all over downtown Portland.
Those signs are for Venerable Properties, headed up by Art DeMuro, who’s also chair of the landmarks commission.
