A Portland police officer shot a man Thursday evening near NE Grand and Holladay Street, according to a Portland Police Bureau (PPB) press release. The victim was transported to the hospital where he later died. No officers were injured in the incident.

According to an updated PPB press release, police officers were responding to a welfare check on a white man at a Motel 6 on Holladay Street around 7 pm, June 24. Officers arrived with paramedics and then shot the man, according to police.

Witnesses at the scene described the shooting taking place in the parking lot of the motel. Several said they saw a fire truck and ambulance arrive at the scene before PPB arrived.

Activists gathered near the scene around 9:30 pm to protest the shooting, facing the police line and squeaking pig toys. Police later sprayed chemical weapons to disperse the protesters.

The police will release the name of the officer who shot and killed the man later today, in accordance with PPB policy.

This is the second instance of a PPB officer killing a member of the public in 2021. In April, PPB officer Zachary DeLong fatally shot Robert Delgado in Lents Park after believing Delgado to be armed.
