The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) has identified the man killed by Portland officer Curtis Brown Thursday, June 24, as Michael Ray Townsend.

Townsend, 40, died Thursday evening after Brown shot him in the parking lot of a Motel 6 on NE Grand and NE Holladay. Surveillance video shared by PPB shows Townsend pointing a sharp, screwdriver-like tool at Brown and other first responders before Brown fired at him, but it's unknown what led up to the altercation.

PPB has not shared any additional information about the fatal shooting. Brown has been placed on paid administrative leave as his shooting is investigated.

An autopsy performed by the Oregon State Medical Examiner's office Friday determined Townsend died from a gunshot wound.

Townsend is the second person to be killed by a PPB officer in 2021. In April, PPB officer Zachary DeLong fatally shot a man named Robert Delgado in Southeast Portland's Lents Park. That shooting remains under investigation.
