Those big corporate arts-and-craft supply chains like JOANN and Michaels no doubt have lots of variety and notoriety. (Is it just me, or are those places spendier and more unpleasant than expected during every visit?) But there are lots of smaller, locally owned shops around Portland to get your crafty gift-giving on. Here are five great spots to replenish your craft cupboard just in time for the holidays.

Collage

Whether visiting their Division, Alberta, or Sellwood locations, Collage boutiques seem to have everything. The shop has an excellent selection of greeting cards, stamps, a bullet journal section, Perler kits (remember those!?), embroidery and cross-stitching materials, and the usual paints and tools. And while I wasn’t too impressed with their stock of candle wax (none were vegan), the store likely has an answer to most any crafty conundrum. Also see their truly impressive Great Wall of Waste (decorative tape) near the front. (1639 NE Alberta; 3701 SE Division; 1634 SE Bybee)

Artist and Craftsman Art Supply

This shop on North Lombard is on the larger side; wandering through the seemingly endless aisles of floor-to-ceiling colors, supplies, and tools will have you fantasizing about all the artforms you could (and probably should) have mastered by now. It can be a little overwhelming, but that’s why the friendly and knowledgeable staff are there. And while the store seems to have a focus on “fine art” supplies, there’s also a bitchload of crafting stuff. (2906 N Lombard; 3393 SE 21st)

Clary Sage Herbarium

Clary Sage Herbarium on Alberta is an Indigenous-, Two-Spirit-, woman-owned store with a mission to “promote local awareness and offer a sacred place of physical and emotional healing.” Owner Laurie Lava-Books also owns Two Spirit Medicinals, a line of formulas made from organic, ethically wild-crafted herbs, flower, and gem essences. The healing-focused shop is now settled in a new location on Alberta, and it’s a true treasure trove of a shopping experience. Sip on their daily tea concoction while you scent-shop for bulk herbs, oils, clays, and essential oils in order to make your own tinctures, butters, potions, candles, or herbal remedy of choice. (2901 NE Alberta)

Scrap PDX

If you’re looking to save some money and lessen your carbon footprint in the creation of your handmade gifts, head to Scrap PDX, a donation-based creative reuse store, where you can sift through reused materials at a 60 to 75 percent discount! Plus the environmentally friendly shop also functions as an organization that provides educational opportunities to the community and showcases the work of reuse-oriented artists in their gallery. This is what I like to call a win-win...win! (1736 SW Alder)

Crafty Wonderland Holiday Art + Craft Market

Just because you didn’t manage to make your mom a nice gift by hand, doesn’t mean she wouldn’t thoroughly enjoy a handmade gift that someone else made and sold to you! If your creative effort goes completely awry, head over to one of Portland’s favorite two-day holiday shopping bonanzas. The Crafty Wonderland Holiday Art + Craft Market hosts 250 of Portland’s insanely talented makers. Also, do make sure not to dilly-dally on Friday and Saturday—the first 150 people through the door get goodie bags! (Sat Dec 14 & Sun Dec 15, 11 am-6 pm, Oregon Convention Center, 777 NE MLK, all ages, FREE)
