- An assemblage by MK Guth, up now at Elizabeth Leach Gallery.
Robert Ham spoke to Jessica Hopper about her new book, The First Collection of Criticism by a Living Female Rock Critic, calling her “one of the sharpest and most fiery writers working today, filling column inches with deeply felt and unabashedly feminist stories and reviews of small noise-punk bands like Coughs and arena-ready superstars like Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.” Hopper reads at Beacon Sound on Sunday. See you there!
Thomas Ross reviewed Grounded, CoHo Productions’ latestโand just the latest in what seems to be an art-about-drones trend. Despite a strong performance from Rachel Lingafelter, he writes, “Grounded becomes just another in the long, long, long tradition of overblown studies in unexamined madness.”
This weekend, PICA celebrates its 20th birthday. I checked out the linked retrospective of work by artists affiliated with PICA, up now at Elizabeth Leach Gallery, “a contained, accessible primer that nods at more opaquely conceptual work without getting too much into the art-school weeds.” (My, but it is weird to quote yourself!) The show’s more than worth a visit, and tomorrow’s costume-enabling b-day afterparty* will be too. ART PARTY! ART PARTY!
In other arts news: Northwest Classical Theatre Company’s leaving Portland after 17 years. Two PEN Literary Award winners announced this week have ties to Portland. And if you missed our coverage of last weekend’s glorious Bridgetown Comedy Fest, you can catch right on up here.
*There’s a fancy pre-party too, but it comes with fancy pricing, so unless you’re an actual Medici, I endorse the afterparty route!
