MUSIC–Get those frugging shoes on your feets, and grease up the floor for
Little Champions: a rockin’ tight threesome with wailing vocals, a zippy organ,
and enough pep to fire up an auditorium of bored, Ritalin-riddled teens. And…
what’s that? Death Cab for Cutie is also playing? Well, I’d say our night is
complete. WSH
w/ Johnny Vanderslice, Meow Meow, 527 SE Pine, 230-2111, 9 pm, $8
FRIDAY MARCH 23
TYPING–Clad in identical secretarial suits, and with the help of bells, horns,
and whistles, three women take dictation from the audience and blast out original
poetry from their manual typewriters. Don’t get it? Seeing is believing with
the TypingExplosion, one of the most entertaining modes of poetry since… well,
ever. WSH
Groundswell Cafe,1800 NE Alberta,331-1420, 8-11 pm, $3-5 sliding scale
WARMTH–Every time Aden puts on a show, they leave you feeling as if
you’ve known them for years. No pyrotechnics, no wacky solos, not even an exorbitant
amount of energy–just an hour of pure, warm guitars, soft voices, and honest,
best-friend lyrics. JS
w/ Track Star, Arch Angles, Meow Meow, 527 SE Pine, 230-2111, 9 pm, $7
INSTRUMENTAL FEST–Trippy and climactic, Species Being kind of makes you feel
like you’re running around in a big black hole, but in a good way. No words,
just cool, synthetic drums stretched over a bed of spiny, stringy needles. KD
w/ Operacycle and Cosmos Group, Medicine Hat, 1834 NE Alberta, 778-7700, 9:30
pm, $7
SATURDAY MARCH 24
LEMONS–I know you think you love lemons and all, but do you love
lemons? I mean, have you ever been in love with a lemon? Lawrence
Krauser has, and he’s also lived to write about it. The latest McSweeney’s publication,
this book sounds weird. And good. Come hear the reading. KD
Groundswell Cafรฉ, 1800 NE Alberta, 331-1420, 8-11 pm, $3-$5
ROAMING GALLERY–So you hate galleries because they’re all bourgeois and pretentious?
Fear not. Not only is this one run by a bunch of poor kids, it doesn’t even
have a permanent location! Called Alphabet Dress, this gallery has once-a-month
installations of cool, independent, cheap art in a different house each month.
This month, the artist is Zefrey Throwell, who creates giant paintings using
primary shapes and colors, except with a little postmodern twist. KD
Alphabet Dress, 536 NE Cook, 7 pm, free
SUNDAY MARCH 25
RADIO–Wanna be kickin’ it old school? Then get with the D.O.double G on Snoop
Dogg Radio. Hosted every Sunday night by the Dogg himself, this syndicated show
features the best funk and hip-hop from back when you were a lower case G. Take
it from me, Snoop Doggy-Dogg does the jobby-job! WSH
Jammin 95.5 FM, 6 pm, free
WOMAN-TURNED-CERAMIC–Rise, Descend, Rise: Rebecca David’s one-woman theater performance sounds really weird: stories of ceramics artist Beatrice Wood interwoven with personal accounts of her own life. But aren’t you sick of seeing conventional theater anyway? How many chances do you get to see a woman become a piece of ceramic art? KD
Performance Works Northwest, 4625 SE 67th Ave, 777-1907, Sat 8 pm, Sun 4 pm, $5-$10
MONDAY MARCH 26
FILM–A family attempts to bring a comatose mother back to consciousness by
talking to her. These one-sided conversations provide a forum for the family
members to work out their individual concerns, making Edward Yang’s Yi Yi an unforgettable film that draws you in and makes you forget you’re in a theater.
WSH
Cinema 21, 616 NW 21st Ave, 223-4515, 7 pm, $6
TUESDAY MARCH 27
RUINS–According to the latest issue of Noise Punk Weekend Planner, in regards to Japanese rioters The Ruins: Turn-ons: Chaos, Static, Bill
Bruford. Faves: Creating their own language. For instance, perhaps they’d sing
“mando” instead of “mandolin,” or “AEIIEIEYII!” instead of, “Can you scratch
right there, please?” JS
w/ Ghidra and Starantula, Pine Street Theatre, 215 SE 9th Ave, 224-TIXX, 9
pm, $12
WEDNESDAY MARCH 28
MUSIC–Energetic, space-age, and static-clingy, like floating in a plastic
bubble across the ocean: That’s The Shins. They’re smart, like the good
Blur albums, only they’re American and have a lot of cool keyboards. But they’re
just as cute! JS
w/ 764-HERO, Lola’s at the Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W Burnside, 225-0047, 8 pm, $8
