THURSDAY APRIL 26
MUSIC–You know, sometimes we all need a reminder to “cum on feel the noize”
and for the “girls to rock your boyz.” That’s because those veteran rockers
with questionable make-up skills Quiet Riot are coming to town, and who knows?
Maybe if they aren’t too creaky, things could even get “wild, wild, WILD.”
WSH
Mt. Tabor Pub, 4811 SE Hawthorne, 224-TIXX, 9:30, $18 advance
FILM–With 99 percent matches between human and primate DNA, sometimes it’s difficult to tell the difference between my family members and monkeys. Why then do we treat them so cruelly? (Monkeys, that is.) Matt Rossell spent two years undercover at the Oregon Primate Center gathering footage of animal testing/torture. Watch his eye-opening films, hear his testimonies, and contribute to a fundraiser for the campaign against The Oregon Primate Center. PB
Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd, 293-1853, 7-9 pm, $10, sliding scale
FRIDAY APRIL

MUSIC–Dank, epic, and windy–so describes Boston’s Victory at Sea. With Mona
Elliott’s vocals emerging through her lips like a crackling, frozen wind, and
guitars fueled by undertow, you’ll thrash like you’ve been reigned in by confusion
and beauty. JS
Medicine Hat, 1834 NE Alberta, 778-7700, 9:30 pm, $7
SATURDAY APRIL

MUSIC–Need some innovative punk to resurrect the pissed-off passion you forgot
during the Clinton Administration? Check out Q and Not U (Dischord’s newest
addition to the good fight), and their compositionally revolving, post-emo (Ha!
Ha!), snappy guitars and vocals. (Read more about them on pg 15!) JS

ICONS–How often do you get to see punk-rock-n-roll icons play shows in Portland?
Oh, wait–never mind. But how often do those same icons musically evolve over
a span of three decades, rarely (if ever) releasing anything sub-par or played-out?
That’s what I thought. The Mekons deserve your respect. JS See Music

TUESDAY MAY 01
“PARADE”–For centuries, May Day has fallen under oppressive thumbs. Originally
a pagan holiday celebrating the first spring planting, the Catholic Church kiboshed
their medieval pole dancing. In more modern times, May Day has been a rallying
point for assorted workers’ rights. Planners for this year’s celebration are
trying to peacefully step out from the long shadow cast from last year’s whomping.
Be safe, people! PB
May Day Parade, starts at NW 8th and W. Burnside, 972-7796, 4:00 pm
WEDNESDAY APRIL 02
FILM NOIR–So I know you loved Memento and everything, but where were
you when Chris Nolan directed Following, huh? A similarly noirish-psycho-stalker
kind of film, Following trails the life of a pathetic writer who is duped
into breaking and entering, and the insane fallout that is the result. KD
Clinton Street Theater, 2522 SE Clinton St, 238-8899, April 27-May 10, 7:00, 9:00 pm
