POTPOURRI–If it’s not easily defined by preexisting categories, it’s probably interesting. Carl Hancock Rux, with his No Black Male Show, fuses poetry, dance, music, theatre, and racial politics. Talk about killing a bunch of birds with one stone! MS
Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy, 281-4215, 8pm, $16 general, $13 members
MUSIC–Quirky pop that can still make you dance your ass off? You betcha! Dive headlong into the scritchity-scratchity, calliope sound of Solex (aka Amsterdam’s Elisabeth Esselink). Smoothly integrating folk-blues, ’60s bossa-nova pop and indie cred into a complex musical collage, Solex is equally capable of freaking you out and shaking your can down to the ground! And whoopee! Cobra High will be there, too! WSH w/ Dรคlek
Satyricon, 125 NW 6th, 224-TIXX, 9:30 pm, $8
Friday Nov 16
WHAT PLANET?–Back in the early ’90s, a few brilliant MCs with sight beyond their time started making some music out of Fresno. Planet Asia grew up there, and cultivated his skills, with rhyming so tight and lean, it’s like he’s speaking in another language. Asianic perhaps? KD
Roseland Theater, 8 NW 6th Ave, 9 pm, $16
MUSIC–Battling daylight savings-induced depression with self-help books and sweat pants? Catch the Trembling Blue Stars’ pop melancholy and playful electronic smatterings. Like watching injured puppies frolic, the cheerful moments cut your heart out. Because, for the last time, sad is pretty. MS w/ Rollerball and Papillon
Dante’s,1 SW 3rd, 224-TIXX, 9:30pm, $8
Saturday Nov 17
FILM–It’s “Holocaust Comedy” week at the Guild, and if that term makes you raise an eyebrow, simply grab that errant brow and stick it back in place, because we’re talking about The Producers. Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel are washed-up Broadway producers who concoct a scheme to put on a musical about Hitler, and when it flops, collect the insurance money. Hilarious and an Oscar-winner! WSH
Guild Theatre, SW 9th & Taylor, 221-1156, 4:30 & 9 pm, $6.50
DJ–Mr. Scruff mixes it up right with some funk and soul spliced with some technotronic and ambient. It’s a mellow yet flavorful mix that inspires dimmed lights, low-energy dancing, sipping icy cocktails, and checking out tall, dark, stoic-looking men. Naked Sushi hosts this event and serves succulent sushi and sake, for a little bit of a hefty price. Take this opportunity to stimulate the economy. KS w/ DJ Roc, Birth, Dubtronic Science
Naked Sushi, 820 N Russell, 381-6331 for res., $40 or $20 after 11 pm, 8 pm
Sunday Nov 18
DANCE–Sure, she gained local fame as a bold stage actress, but Christine Calfas’ first love is dancing. Just to learn fluid erotic Eastern dance moves, she spent fourteen years taxiing between the U.S. and India. After being sidelined by a near-fatal auto accident a year ago, she is back in a dreamy and curious piece about–what else?–approaching death. PB
Conduit Studio, 918 SW Yamhill, 4th Floor, 221-5857, Fri-Sat 8 pm, Sun 7 pm, $15
HORSERACING–Some people place their bets by choosing the horse. I tried that, but Swamp Kitten and Moon Smoke Budd–“sure bets”–let me down. What’s my new science? I chose the jockey. Juan Gutierrez rides once or twice each weekend and wins! Well, at least half of the time. PB
Portland Meadows, Exit 307 off I-5, Post Time 1 pm (races until approx. 4 pm), $2 minimum bet
Monday Nov 19
FILM–Not only is this Taiwanese film, The River, about incest (eww), but it also involves a really disgusting growth on someone’s body, which gets worse and worse throughout the movie. (Double ewww.) But don’t you kind of want to see it? KD
Clinton Street Theater, 2522 SE Clinton, 7 & 9:20, 238-8899
MUSIC–Although I kicked Isaac Brock’s sorry, marijuana-riddled ass in Mercury music trivia, I will still be heading out tonight to see his solo project (the unfortunately named Ugly Cassanova) because his singing voice has such a lovely scratch to it (possibly from all the crizzity-chron)! JS w/ Les Savy Fav, Defacto
Blackbird, 3728 NE Sandy, 282-9949, 9:30 pm, $9
Tuesday Nov 20
BIKES–Even if you think a pedal wrench is a type of food, you can still learn to fix a bike and spread a little goodness. The awesome CCC needs your help in fixing 1000 bikes. They’re giving them away to low-income kids–that’s 1000 less people out there driving like assholes. JS
Holiday Bike Drive, Community Cycling Center, 1700 NE Alberta, 288-8864, 7-9 pm, free and you learn to fix bikes!
Wednesday Nov 21
OXES–I am so friggin’ upset that I’m going to be out of town during this show that I’m going to have to take three Xanax just to calm myself down. (Call Katie at 294-0840 ex. 23 if you have any spare Xanax.) The Oxes’ energetic instrumental rock is better than snowflakes and homemade turkey gravy, any day. Pretty Girls Make Graves are the spawn of Murder City Devils–Jesus, they reproduce faster then gremlins. KS w/ Bonobo Project
Satyricon, 125 NW 6 th, 224-TIXX, 9:30 pm, $7
