Starkys Restaurant and Bar, a longtime fixture in Portland's gay community, closed its doors forever on September 13 to make way for a 46-unit multifamily apartment building.

According to the now-shuttered restaurant's website, Starkys has been serving up food and drinks since 1984. The building sold in March of this year for $1.2 million. No demolition permits have been issued by the city as of this post, but on Sept. 2 the city received an early intake permit application for the building that will eventually be built on the lot, which is located at 2913 SE Stark St.

The restaurant's Facebook page indicates the owners, Joe and Greg, sold the restaurant with plans to retire. I reached out to see if I could get a comment on the closure, but no one answered the phone. Commenters on Facebook were universally sad to see the place close down.
