Yesterday, Google released a video of its new self-driving car design. The car has no steering wheel or pedals, it seats two, and it’s powered by an electric motor.
I’m on the record as being a big fan of these cars. I think they’ll forever change the idea of car ownership and transportation in America. But what do you think?
It’s a good concept, but I think it ignores the fact that our population continues to grow. If only they could do something like this that had a more efficient use of space…say, maybe could hold 30-50 people and ran on a predictable, fixed route? And then maybe there was a living-wage job involved to make sure things ran smoothly and that people were able to get on and off as needed? And just charged an affordable fare that could be subsidized for people like seniors and people with disabilities who would rely more heavily on it to get around? And it could run more frequently during peak times like rush hour?
Unfortunately, I know of no such technology.
I think this self-driving car is clearly smarter than Paul Constant.

Cause single passenger cars for everyone will be SO much better for the planet!
Can’t wait to see the production model. The interior will be plastered in video screens to blast the rider with an ever-changing see of nauseating advertising vomit.

That spinning camera/radar thing on top sure looks fragile. What happens when a leaf gets caught in there? Or bird poo?
Great. Whatever gets old people out from behind the wheel, I’m all for.
That spinny thing on top has been there on all their other test cars, uses radar, and it would probably take a lot more than a leaf or bird poo for it to affect how it works.
