15 years ago, I sailed into town with fleet week, and decided I would live in Portland one day. I finally moved here a little over two years ago on a whim, scored a reasonable job with an established company, and bike to work, and rent a decent bungalow in a decent neighborhood. Every day, I see you bitching and moaning on facebook or reddit about newcomers. You know what? Fuck your day.
I have found my people, and I contribute to my little subculture. I’m happy here, and my friends are happy I’m here. If you don’t like new people showing up, move to Detroit or Cleveland. No one moves there. You’ll have nothing to complain about.

I’m really sick of people talking shit about places like Cleveland or Detroit as they are the most repugnant places on Earth deserving of a bunch of cast-off assholes. Yeah, those places might be struggling, but guess what? Human beings live there, some of whom are trying to make positive changes in their communities. Human beings with real problems and issues who aren’t like a bunch of stuck-up, spoiled Portlanders who think they’re the shit just because they live in some provincial little northwest “Utopia.” I’d bet a lot of the people in the downtrodden Rust Belt are a hell of a lot more real and down-to-earth than you phony, stuck-up, unoriginal trend-followers. This kind of superior bullshit is one of the things I hate most about this town. I have half a mind to move to one of those places just to escape the suffocating cloud of SMUG that envelopes this snotty little burg.
Touching story. Did you sail in like Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic?
I helped put together a couple of parties for you guys and gals a while back(20 years?) and, trust me, you definitely ruined Portland a little, but in a good way.
Whoa – slow down there loveanddeath. You can’t dispute the fact that Detroit and Cleveland have lower rates of people migrating there, and certainly not as many “Californians”, “hipsters” or whatever else the bitch of the day is about Portland. All IA said was that there are fewer newcomers in those places, and they would perhaps be more attractive for those complaining about Portland’s growth and newcomers.
I have made the same point on here…If all of these people bitching about Portland hate it so much, why not move to a city that is undergoing fewer growing pains, has more “real” people, fewer invasive transplants, etc.? Detroit and Cleveland fit that bill, among a whole host of other places.
“I have found my people”
What, you’re part of one of the twelve lost tribes of Portland?
Bitching and moaning about bitching and moaning. You’ll fit right in.
Keep an eye out for 14-year-olds who look a lot like you, sailor.
If these continued rants about Portland are a cloaking device for talking shit about Cleveland and Detroit I am all for it.
I am so confused because you said you found your people.
How do you lose your people?
Maybe you should keep an eye on your people.
I’m sick and tired of hearing about people being sick and tired of shit.
Oh, you’ve been here a couple years? That’s funny. Be sure to keep announcing that, because I’m sure it will eventually impress someone.
I’m not convinced that even 2 out of any 10 transplants is in it for the long haul. After you’ve endured a bad stretch– when Portland’s no longer the darling of wayward twenty-somethings who falsely believe that they’re special, unique snowflakes– maybe then you’ll get a taste of the real Portland. You know, the place that existed before and will exist well after High Tide for Assholes has come and gone.
actually Chunty, the preferred term is Peak Asshole.
Chunty, you’re the best.
Wait…we haven’t reached Peak Asshole? Dear God.
His “people” are probably the ones standing next to him in line for brunch. After all he seems to be living the Portland dream, riding to work on his bike from his Bungalo. Go back to Rancho Cucamunga or San Diego you yuppi granola bucket list asshole!
