Why is it anytime I’m telling somebody a story, event, memory, or situation that has happened to me, it somehow turns into a story about them? Look, I’m the one that brought this up. I’m the one that wanted to tell my story. I’m the one who had these thoughts that I wanted to share. Now, of course, it reminds you of something, that happened to you, that it brings up memories for you from you past that is similar in context, and sometimes not similar in context, so why are you bringing this up? I never asked for your advice. I never asked for you input, and didn’t bring anything up to jog your memory. I wanted to talk, without being interrupted for once. Look, people say will all have a story. We all have a voice. Without a doubt, I agree. But not this time. This is my story. My one chance to say what I want to because I usually don’t. Then, sometimes, it turns into some competition, always one upping the story. I stopped listening the moment you brought it to you.
Your Story

If you keep getting slighted then sometimes you just have to slight back
If I make your story about me it’s because your story sucks.
OK, enough about you, let’s talk about me.
It sounds like maybe you are trying to have more of a monologue than a conversation. If you’re looking for a passive audience, you might have to let people know that, or they’ll assume it’s a dialogue they’re allowed to participate in.
Easily solved, tell your stories to the next cat you come across. (Though if you’re as boring as you seem, she’s liable to just…walk..away…)
You may need a new strategy. Perhaps you could try asking the other person if they have something to relate to you, and when you see an opening, tell your story. As you have already said, it doesn’t need to be closely related to what they are saying. In this way, you can make it appear that you care about them, rather than wanting it to be all about you. See how some prior planning can prevent hurt feelings?
Unless your story is about dragons sucking your dick in space while a galaxy explodes, my guess is that most anything you say might not be the sort of thing someone could relate to and perhaps shed some insight on. If, however, your story is about those dick sucking dragons, shut the fuck up, because I’ve known sexier dragons that go all the way. You’d have no frame of reference, so don’t bother to form an opinion.
