FRIDAY, MARCH 18
Acid Mothers Temple, Orphan Goggles, Adventurous Sleeping
They didn’t form ’til 1995, but Japanese psych-rockers Acid Mothers Temple sound like they’re straight out of the late ’60s, and their experimental psychedelia sounds like Their Satanic Majesties Request-era Rolling Stones. Founding father Kawabata Makoto’s droning soundscapes devolve from intricate, hazy fingerpicking into trance-inducing trip music. CIARA DOLAN
Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi, 9 pm, $12-14
Fartbarf, Kulululu, The Toads
You’ve already embraced the gross name/good music of Diarrhea Planet, so say hello to three fellas from Los Angeles in Nudie’s western shirts and Neanderthal man masks. They play silly, charming synth music that’s infinitely infectious and danceable. Introducing the gentlemen and scholars of Fartbarf. Cute! COURTNEY FERGUSON
Analog Cafรฉ, 720 SE Hawthorne, 9 pm, $5
SATURDAY, MARCH 19
Code Orange Easter Egg Drop
The event is called Code Orange Easter Helicopter Egg Drop, and here’s what happens: an actual helicopter drops 20,000 plastic eggs onto Brentwood Park, followed by thousands of screaming kids rushing onto the field to find them. While pre-registration is already full, as spectacles go, this is one that will put Apocalypse Now to shame. WM. STEVEN HUMPHREY
Brentwood Park, SE 60th & Duke, 10 am-12:30 pm, FREE to watch, all ages
Magma, Helen Money
The ecologically minded prog band Magma has been making deeply strange and wonderfully exploratory music for nigh on decades, but tonight is only their second Portland performance ever, following up their long-overdue debut last year. The French band fuses funk, rock, jazz, and chorales sung in a made-up language called Kobaรฏan, so yeah, it’s pretty far out. NED LANNAMANN
Wonder Ballroom, 128 NE Russell, 9 pm, $25-30
50: A Possible History of Dance Music, 1966-2016
If you’ve been looking for a great dance night to attend, put 50: A Possible History of Dance Music, 1966-2016 on your must-do list. DJs Cooky Parker, Gregarious, and Freaky Outty dig deep into their crates to spin the best of five decades of dance hits. And they KNOW what they’re doing. WM. STEVEN HUMPHREY
Holocene, 1001 SE Morrison, 10 pm, $5
SUNDAY, MARCH 20
XRAY.FM’s 2nd Birthday Party
Two years ago, local upstart XRAY.fm clawed its way onto the city’s airwaves with a plan to deliver thoughtful, unique, and, above all, quintessentially Portland programming. And what a ride it’s been! Celebrate your favorite station’s second birthday tonight with booze and music. I won a boombox in a raffle at this thing two years ago. Still works! DIRK VANDERHART
w/Mic Capes, Summer Cannibals, the Ghost Ease, & more; Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi, 9 pm, $10
Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival
Less than an hour outside of town, 40 majestic acres of tulips await you and your dumb frolicking. The Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival might sound super nerdy, but it’s actually the best thing about the Portland area’s absurdly rainy period between February and May. Besides THOUSANDS of tulips, the farm also boasts a sexy view of Mt. Hood on clearer days. CIARA DOLAN
Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm, 33814 S Meridian, Woodburn, OR, daily 9 am-6 pm, through May 1, $5
