The ACLU came out with a series of cool animated videos today to help you know your rights when it comes to interacting with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
ICE has become emboldened under the Trump Administration to arrest and deport undocumented immigrantsโeven if they haven’t commit a crime. We’ve seen a 30 percent increase in ICE-related arrests in 2017, according to the ACLUโthough it’s hard to track what that means for Oregon when ICE doesn’t currently have a spokesperson in our region. ICE is even texting immigrants to try and glean information from them through manipulation.
But these ACLU videos use real-life examples to explain what you can and can’t do if ICE is stalking you. The videos provide tips like: don’t open the door for strangers without a warrant, take photos of documents ICE agents show you (they sometimes pretend to have warrants when they don’t), and document everything they say.
A few famous people collaborated with ACLU to provide the voice overs, including actor Jesse Williams, actress Diane Guerrero, and comedian Kumail Nanjiani. I really dig the animation style, and they’re available in seven different languages. BRB, gonna study Arabic while learning my rights.
