Good morning, Portland! Today I learned there is a Day of the Girl and it is today. Happy Day of the Girl! To celebrate, the New York Times put together a delightful multimedia essay about 18-year-old girls from around the world. Expect another beautiful fall day today in ol’ Portland, Oregon. Cloudy in the morning, sunny and 70 degrees in the afternoon. Here’s some news to start your day:
Brett in Check: Supreme Court Justice John Roberts has referred ethics complaints against new Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals (which encompasses Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and some other states nearby). While Kavanaugh has been confirmed, the conversation about his judicial behavior is not over yet.
Um: China has been sending people to ‘re-education camps’ to improve bad behavior like “refusing to watch state TV and listen to state radio and preventing children from receiving state education.”
It’s Still Hurricane Season: Hurricane Michael made landfall on the Florida panhandle yesterday, tearing through neighborhoods and leaving at least one child dead. The storm now straddles Georgia and South Carolina, heading Northeast. Track its movement here.
Not Everything’s Awful: This guy isn’t the guy his mom thought he was:
When your parents get on Twitter:
“Pieter Hanson was in the middle of a marketing exam when his phone started blowing up, buzzing and buzzing until he was convinced something terrible had happened.” https://t.co/s5eHDyHiqv

Be Best: First Lady Melania Trump speaks out against bullying by saying she is the “most bullied person in the world.” Sigh. Sounds like someone’s been pushing his superlative agenda on Mel.
Fake News 101: Donald Trump wrote an op-ed in USA Today about “Medicare for All.” The Washington Post promptly pointed out how nearly every line is a lie.
Fun Poll! The least popular and most popular US Senators are both old white dudes.
New York City is home to 25,000 transgender and gender non-conforming New Yorkers. Today, they have the right to change their birth certificate to M, F, or X, without a doctor’s note. pic.twitter.com/sS2IGZ9M55

The Resistance: It’s certainly convenient to call a homeless person “service resistant.” But is it accurate? Portland’s longtime homeless outreach experts help clear that up.
AirbnBYE: Thanks to some serious number-crunching by Cornelius Swart and Thacher Schmid, we now know some 1,500 units rented through Airbnb violate Portland’s Airbnb rules.
Put a Placard On It: Portland City Council has voted to label all earthquake-unsafe buildings in Portland by next year. The conversation has created a rift between public safety and equity advocates.
Shooting on 82nd: A hostage situation in an SE 82nd motel turned deadly yesterday when Portland police officers intervened. According to the Portland Police Bureau, an officer shot and killed a man who had been holding a woman hostage at knifepoint inside the Del Rancho Motel.

Just tossing it out there: “equity” and “equality” do not mean the same thing, and should not be used as synonyms. Love, the education you should’ve got in J school.
