Oh hell yes! It’s tempting to feel a little sad that Portland is losing another amazing comedy talent—Mohanad Elshieky—to the bright lights and comedy jobs of New York City! But it also feels great to see Elshieky’s hard work pay off, as he prepares to move to New York to take a job as a digital producer on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. That sounds like a perfect fit.
Via press release, Elshieky announced his upcoming farewell show, The Mohanad Elshieky Going Away Show, at Curious Comedy on Wednesday September 25. Tickets can be purchased here.
Over e-mail Elshieky clarified that he’ll be working on “digital content, promos, online pieces/field pieces” for Full Frontal. He’ll also write jokes for their Twitter account. If you follow him on Twitter, you know that’s a great call on their part.
A Libyan-born comedian who’s lived in the US for five years, Elsheiky’s comedy news bio is a mash-up of well-deserved comedy heights and an ongoing series of new stories about about a day in January when he was detained by Border Patrol agents on a Greyhound bus, heading back to Portland after a comedy show. In April, he sued US Customs and Border Protection for detaining him and doubting his immigration status.
Most recently, Elsheiky appeared on Conan where he delivered a spicy, laid-back routine about his experiences as an immigrant to the US and wanting to speak to the country’s manager. Keep an eye out for his upcoming Mercury exit interview, which will hopefully have some laughs and a little more info about his move.
