Instead of taking wild guesses at which college basketball team will make the cut during March Madness, why not take bets on something that hits a little closer to home? Like, you know, which part of the massively imperiled state budget will survive the slash and burn season?

The Mercury and The Bus Project present this month’s Brewhaha political debate night: March Sadness!

Experts on different parts of the state budget currently on the chopping block will go head-to-head in two minute bouts tomorrow night at Backspace, each trying to convince you, the audience, why their special programs and services should stick around for another year. It’s old folks vs. schools! It’s affordable housing vs. public safety! It’s the Oregon State Budget in 2009!

Come to Backspace to lay out your own bracket of what programs you think will make the cut. The audience votes on what chunks of the budget to keep round by round — winning brackets get awesome and fantastic prizes! Plus the event is hosted Steve “The Fighter with the Hard Left Hook” Novick, which is an awesome and fantastic prize in itself. See you there at 7PM!

Sarah Shay Mirk reported on transportation, sex and gender issues, and politics at the Mercury from 2008-2013. They have gone on to make many things, including countless comics and several books.
