When studios refused to fund Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.’s comic Kick-Ass, Vaughn figured out how to independently finance the thing himself. And as soon as Vaughn was finished shooting it, and soon as everyone realized that it looked fucking awesome, studios like Lionsgate and Universal jumped at the chance to distribute the film.
Here’s a pretty fantastic red-band trailer focusing on one of Kick-Ass‘ characters, Hit-Girl. (A previous clip of Hit-Girl caused a bit of a ruckus a few weeks ago, too.) You can probably see why studios might’ve been nervous about financing this thing.
But you know what? Fuck ’em. If there were more filmmakers doing what Vaughn decided to do, rather than relying on whatever studios deemed to be okay, we’d have a lot more films that look as cool as this and a lot fewer films featuring people like the Morgans.

I would rather have actual issues of the comic, but that doesn’t seem like a priority for anyone involved. Lame.
If you guys post videos with the word “cunts” in them, does that mean I can use the word “cunts” in the comments section?
Or should this video get a bracketed word removal from Mr. Humphrey?
Yeah, in some places, cunt isn’t even a bad word.
This trailer is sure getting a lot of blog action. I don’t get it… I love me some violent, action-y movies, but I can’t suspend my disbelief to think this little girl could do any of that, and I can’t identify with the character because I’m not a little girl. Who asked for a little girl action star? Well, other little girls, I’d imagine – but they probably won’t be allowed to see this…
I guess it’s a deconstruction of superhero conventions? Like how Robin was like 12, but he still ran around punching people in the mouth. Messing with our comfort zones and whatnot.
But yeah, I don’t really get it either.
Not to go off topic, buuuuttt….
CUNT is actually a really bad word, but only when trannys (trannies?) are using it as a noun…
i.e. MY CUNNY.
I mean seriously, WHO SAYS THAT?
The studio PR flacks are going to have a fun time dealing with this one.
I would also like to point out the company that makes the butterfly knife that Hit-Girl is talking about is a local company. PDX gettin’ some love.
