A TIPPLE IN THE SUN is one of life's simple yet profound pleasures—fortunately Portland is blessed with an array of outdoor drinking options. Here's a selection of the best bar patios in town!
Bar Bar
3939 N Mississippi
After working your way through the actual bar, emerging onto Bar Bar's patio is a revelation. The drinks are solid and there's a burger-based menu. You can book a space for a group of 20 or more, and friendly dogs are welcome.
The Baowry
8307 N Ivanhoe
The Baowry sports a lush garden that's surprisingly tranquil despite its location in the heart of St. Johns. During the summer months it's busy with locals filling up on Asian-influenced food—the jicama salad and buns in different varieties are excellent. There's also an interesting cocktail list, including a Negroni made with smoked tea.
Departure
525 SW Morrison You'll want to come here for the views—you can spy on downtown going about its business, or enjoy Portland's extensive panorama. But if this gets boring, the people-watching on the terrace is unrivaled. Though pricey, the drinks are generally top quality.
The Hop and Vine
1914 N Killingsworth
The Hop and Vine really comes into its own during the summer months thanks to its large attractive patio. The smoker or the BBQ might be going, adding to the al fresco atmosphere. Plus there's a good selection of microbrews, quality cocktails, and a better-than-average bar menu.
Landmark Saloon
4847 SE Division
This unpretentious honky-tonk has a huge patio—way bigger than the actual bar itself. There are lots of tables, several cornhole lanes, and dogs are allowed. It can get busy, but it generally has a mellow atmosphere.
Prost!
4237 N Mississippi
Prost! probably doesn't need any more publicity (it gets crazy busy as it is), but there's no better place to hang in the sun with a refreshing German beer. There's an outdoor bar for when things are bumping, and a bunch of food carts to select from if bratwurst and sauerkraut isn't your thing.
Rontoms
600 E Burnside
While it may have a bit of a hipster reputation, don't let that put you off, as Rontoms has a splendid patio with mixed seating options and fire pits—it works especially well for large groups. There's also ping-pong, though be prepared to be hustled off the table on a busy night.
Teote
1615 SE 12th
Come for the Latin American street food and excellent margaritas; stay for the patio, hidden away out back. It's partially covered so you shouldn't bake in the sun, and it has its own bar. For the cooler evenings, huddle around the large fire pit.
Vendetta
4306 N Williams
Head out back at Vendetta and you're suddenly transported from a shadowy bar into a Zen-like paradise—or a least a serene patio with shrubs and gravel and plenty of seating. There's a decent tap list (pitchers are available) and a menu of cheese pretzels, sandwiches, and the like. Grab a seat with an umbrella or bring sunscreen—because it gets hot as hell out there.
White Owl Social Club
1305 SE 8th
For some, the sizeable patio is the reason to come here—it's attractive, there's a fire pit and plenty of seating so you're (nearly) always guaranteed a table, even in a large group. The other reason to come is for the excellent vegan beet burger.
