Portland Playhouse opens Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, the third installment in August Wilson's Pittsburgh Cycle, a series of 10 plays examining the African American experience in different decades.

At the always-reliable Theatre Vertigo , Elmer Rice's The Adding Machine, described thusly: "Mr. Zero is a hapless cog in the vast machine of modern business. When he discovers that he is going to be replaced by an adding machine, he snaps."

At Public House , Same Time, Next Year, which follows a couple whose adulterous affair unfolds one night a year, for 24 years.

Comedy wise, comedian Maz Jobrani is at the Aladdin on Sunday—Andrew Tonry has an interesting interview with Jobrani about comedy and the Middle East.
