In theater, Trek in the Park opens this weekend. You should go, it’ll be fun. (Read all about it in this week’s feature.) Just remember to hydrate. Hipsters die in hot parks.
Also opening this weekend, CoHo’s “World Premiere Summer” brings you the premiere of a show called Live Girls, which is set in the locker room of a strip club and sounds like it aims to pull a Kitchen Confidential on the world of stripping.
In our visual arts section, Matt Stangel’s got a piece on the pop-up galleries that’ve moved into Pioneer Place. There’s this thing that happens every summer that strikes me as a tiny bit hilarious and a tiny bit desperate, which is that local arts organizations start advertising the fact that their venues are air conditionedโbut can you beat the mall for aggressive AC?
In books, I valiantly try to overcome my basic indifference to Vendela Vida’s new book. Erik valiantly tries to overcome his man-crush on Matt Fraction in order to conduct a coherent interview. And I gush gushily about Allegra Goodman’s The Cookbook Collector, which I would say is a “great summer read” except I’ve recently realized I don’t actually believe in the concept of seasonally prescribed reading. (Do we not want smart plotting and well-drawn characters year round?)
And! Oni Press has been inviting local media down to their office to read embargoed copies of Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour; I got my turn yesterday. I agreed not to say anything spoiler-y, but I can say that I was generally satisfied with the series’ conclusion. So. How’s that for both gloating AND vague.
