Forgetters Another week, another Mercury music section to spill your Flavor Flav’s Fried Chicken on. If Flav can sling chicken, then Professor Griff’s kosher deli can’t be too far behind. Okay, maybe not. After years in exile, Blake Schwarzenbach emerges from his sadness cave and talks about his new band (Forgetters), his old band (Jawbreaker), […]
Ezra Ace Caraeff
Ezra Ace Caraeff is the former Music Editor for the Mercury, and spent nearly a third of his life working at the paper. More importantly, he is the owner of Olive, the Mercury’s unofficial office dog. His writing has appeared in The Fader, The Stranger, The Onion's A.V. Club, ESPN's TrueHoop network, and countless fanzines that are thankfully long out of print. He makes a mean tofu scramble and yes, Ace is really his middle name.

The Artistery is Shutting Down in March
Photo of the crowd at a White Fang show at the Artistery Well, this is terrible news. In a devastating blow to the already battered local all-age music community, Portland showspace the Artistery is closing down for good. After eight years—a lifetime for a barely-funded DIY venue—the SE Portland space will be shuttering in March. […]
This Week’s Mercury Music Section
Dominic Savini Hey Freeway, where’s Jake One? Another week, another Mercury music section to ignore in favor of the Johnny Marr autobiography. Is there a chapter about that one time I saw him at Music Millennium and then stalked him all over Portland? Uh, of course not. Because that never happened. Nope. No sir. Know […]

Here is Your 2011 Coachella Lineup
Lotsa big names in the desert this year—from Kanye to Arcade Fire to Lauryn Hill—for the 2011 edition of Coachella (running April 15-17 in Indio, California) . As for Portland bands representing at the festival, well, there are not many. There is the new-look Menomena and YACHT, and that’s about it. Unless Robyn moved to […]
Marcus Camby Partially Tears Meniscus
Getty Images Well this is going to come as a shock, but—get this—turns out that a Portland Trail Blazers’ center has injured his knee. Crazy, right? I’ll give you a moment to clean up the coffee you just spit out everywhere. From the O‘s Jason Quick. Center Marcus Camby has a partial tear of his […]
Pavement on Ace of Cakes
Our suspiciously svelte food critic Tony Perez posted about this earlier this month, but now we have all the frosted excitement of the Ace of Cakes episode starring Pavement. The band’s customized cake was “mudslide” flavored—in tribute to “Debris Slide” off their Perfect Sound Forever EP—and shaped like a horse. Whatever, this cake is shaped […]
Blazers vs. Timberwolves – Hot Live Blog Action
Live from the Rose Garden as the Portland Trail Blazers welcome Team Jacob and the rest of the Minnesota Timberwolves. The bumbling Washington Generals to the Blazers’ Harlem Globetrotters, the Timberwolves have lost 14 straight games to Portland, including ten in a row in this building. But who cares about that? Let’s play the game […]
Blazers vs. Nets – Hot Live Blog Action
Live from the Rose Garden as the Portland Trail Blazers meet the New Jersey Nets in a spirited round of five-on-five roundball. As the Blazers continue their descent down the super fun happy slide towards mediocrity—last night’s heartbreaking 115-111 loss in Phoenix only expedited things—a visit from the lowly Nets just might be what the […]
Let’s Rename the Rose Garden!
Looking good, ExtenZe Arena Blazers fans, be thankful for Paul Allen. And no, this is not another post about the sheer unbridled insanity that pours from John Canzano’s pen. This is about Power Balance wristbands, as in those snake oil, placebo-on-the-wrist accessories that have been proved to be a complete and total scam. A very […]
Brandon Roy to Have Surgery on Both Knees
According to the Portland Tribune Portland Trail Blazers’ guard Brandon Roy will go under the knife for arthroscopic surgery on both of his knees next week. Then, he’ll do it again. (In other news, if you need some percocet, hit up Brandon Roy.) Team doctor Don Roberts will handle the surgery next week on the […]
